Senior Java Backend Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer to design, develop and deliver backend services for a software engineering team that uses Generative AI in its daily work.

You will quickly learn a new product, its architecture, integrations and business context, and deliver production-ready changes through a Spec-Driven Development process. You will use GenAI for coding, refactoring, debugging, testing, documentation and codebase exploration, while you keep full technical understanding and ownership of each result.

The role is focused on backend engineering, service integrations, data processing and the delivery path to production. You will be responsible for the complete result, not only an individual backend task. You will own the CI/CD pipelines of the applications that you develop until they produce artifacts that are ready for production.

This is a hands-on engineering role. Product priorities remain with the product owners. Cross-system architecture, infrastructure, security and release decisions remain with their authorised owners.

Team & Transformation Context The team is moving towards GenAI-first development and Spec-Driven Development. Some practices are already in place, while others are still being developed.

You will use specifications, code, automated tests, CI/CD and AI tools in one engineering workflow. You will help the team find reliable ways to use GenAI and make sure that AI-generated work is checked independently before it goes to production.

Key Responsibilities

- Use a Spec-Driven Development process for coding, refactoring, debugging, testing, documentation and codebase exploration. Keep specifications, implementation, tests and documentation consistent.
- Review and validate AI-generated solutions critically before they are used in production.



Modify or reject them when they are not correct or not suitable.
- Design and develop backend services, APIs, integrations and data-processing solutions with Java and Spring Boot.
- Define service contracts with OpenAPI and AsyncAPI. Design for validation, compatibility, security, error handling and partial failure.
- Work with databases, distributed systems and service-to-service integrations.
- Learn unfamiliar codebases, architecture, dependencies and product context quickly. Understand how the system works from end to end.
- Own the CI/CD pipelines for the applications that you develop, and produce artifacts that are ready for production.
- Use monitoring and runtime evidence to find the cause of problems in distributed systems.
- Contribute to architecture, code reviews, technical decisions, mentoring and engineering quality.
- Work closely with frontend, QA, product, architecture and infrastructure teams.

Required Experience

- Strong production experience with Java and Spring Boot, typically nine years or more of backend software engineering with senior-level ownership and technical judgement.
- Strong hands-on experience using GenAI in everyday software development, with examples of how you checked its output.
- Ability to understand, explain, validate, modify or reject AI-generated code without relying only on generated tests, compilation or an AI self-review.
- Good knowledge of the Spec-Driven Development process and frameworks such as OpenSpec.




- Ability to turn an incomplete change request into a explicit specification with expected behaviour, examples, errors and open decisions.
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, OpenAPI, AsyncAPI, microservices, integrations, data models, databases, error handling, security and distributed systems.
- Ability to understand complex systems and unfamiliar technical domains quickly.
- Strong systems thinking and interest in the product beyond individual backend tasks.
- Good understanding of DevOps practices such as CI/CD, containers, deployment, monitoring and troubleshooting.
- Ability to explain technical decisions, risks and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical people.
- Skilled working proficiency in English (B2 level or above).

Preferred Experience

- Experience with Kubernetes and cloud platforms.
- Experience with messaging systems and asynchronous integrations.
- Experience with infrastructure as code and observability tools.
- Experience with industrial or manufacturing software.
- Frontend development experience. Familiarity with Angular and modern frontend development principles.
- Good understanding of GenAI internals and related tools such as MCP, LangChain or CrewAI, and of when these tools are not necessary.
- Experience with AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or GitHub Copilot.
- Experience helping other engineers adopt GenAI or Spec-Driven Development practices.

Engineering judgement matters more than experience with a specific technology. The successful candidate will use sound technical judgement, show strong curiosity and learn fast. They will take end-to-end ownership of the product results that they deliver, use GenAI as a tool without giving it responsibility for the result, and deliver backend changes that work correctly in production.
