Role Overview

We are looking for an accomplished Senior Director of Engineering to lead and scale large engineering organisations, drive technology strategy, and build highly scalable, resilient, and high-performance technology platforms.

The ideal candidate should have strong experience in e-commerce, online marketplaces, consumer internet, or large-scale digital businesses, with a proven track record of architecting and delivering complex technology platforms handling high transaction volumes, large user bases, and mission-critical business operations.

This role requires a strategic technology leader who can combine strong architectural expertise with business acumen, lead multiple engineering teams, drive engineering excellence, and translate business objectives into scalable technology solutions.

Key Responsibilities

1. Engineering Strategy & Technology Leadership

- Define and execute the long-term engineering strategy aligned with business objectives and product vision.
- Lead the architecture, design, development, and delivery of large-scale distributed systems and digital platforms.
- Drive technology modernisation, platform scalability, performance optimisation, and engineering transformation.
- Establish engineering standards, best practices, and technology governance across teams.
- Make critical architectural decisions around scalability, availability, security, and system performance.

1. Marketplace & E-commerce Platform Engineering

- Lead engineering initiatives for high-scale e-commerce and marketplace ecosystems.
- Drive the development of core platform capabilities such as:
- Product Catalog Management and Search
- Pricing, Promotions and Recommendations
- Order Management Systems (OMS)
- Payments, Checkout and Transaction Processing




- Inventory and Supply Chain Integrations
- Seller/Vendor Management and Marketplace Enablement
- Customer Experience and Personalisation
- Build platforms capable of supporting high traffic, concurrent users, and large transaction volumes.
- Ensure seamless integrations across multiple business systems, third-party platforms, and partner ecosystems.

1. Architecture & Distributed Systems

- Drive the design and implementation of scalable microservices-based architectures.
- Provide technical direction across distributed systems, event-driven architecture, APIs, and cloud-native platforms.
- Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, resilience, and performance across critical systems.
- Champion modern engineering practices, including DevOps, CI/CD, observability, and automated testing.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and drive adoption where they deliver measurable business value.

1. Organisation & People Leadership

- Lead and mentor multiple engineering teams through Engineering Managers, Senior Managers, and Technical Architects.
- Build a high-performing engineering organisation with strong ownership and accountability.
- Develop leadership capabilities, succession planning, and technical talent development.
- Establish a culture of innovation, collaboration, continuous learning, and engineering excellence.
- Drive effective collaboration across Product, Design, Data, Business, and Operations teams.

1. Business & Product Collaboration

- Partner with senior business and product stakeholders to define technology roadmaps and execution priorities.




- Translate complex business requirements into scalable and sustainable engineering solutions.
- Drive faster product releases while maintaining quality, reliability, and platform stability.
- Own engineering delivery, execution metrics, productivity, and technology investments.
- Contribute to strategic business decisions through technology-led innovation.

Required Skills & Experience
- 14+ years of overall experience in software engineering, technology architecture, and engineering leadership.
- Significant experience in e-commerce, online marketplaces, consumer internet, retail technology, or large-scale digital platforms.
- Proven experience leading large engineering organisations and managing multiple engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices, event-driven architecture, and cloud-native technologies.
- Experience building and scaling high-traffic, high-availability platforms handling large volumes of transactions.
- Solid technical understanding of backend technologies such as Java, Python, Go, Node.js, or similar.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Strong understanding of databases, caching, messaging systems, APIs, and system design.
- Experience driving DevOps, SRE, CI/CD, observability, and engineering productivity initiatives.
- Ability to balance strategic technology decisions with hands-on architectural guidance.
- Strong stakeholder management, communication, and executive leadership skills.
