Position Overview The Cloud, Engineer - Linux and Automation is an infrastructure engineering role responsible for the administration, automation, and continuous improvement of Thrive's Linux-based and virtualized infrastructure. The role owns the build-out of Thrive's Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practice from the existing Ansible and Terraform framework, establishing the standards, reusable code, and workflows the team uses to provision and manage infrastructure. The engineer also works hands-on with the VMware vSphere and HPE Morpheus Enterprise HVM (KVM-based) virtualization hosts that make up Thrive's private cloud, serves as a Tier 2 escalation point for infrastructure issues, and partners with senior engineers and architects to design and implement repeatable, code-driven solutions while keeping Linux systems secure, patched, and operating within established SLAs.
The ideal candidate comes from a systems administration or infrastructure engineering background and brings hands-on virtualization and IaC experience at scale, robust Linux troubleshooting skills, and an automation-first, security-first mindset focused on operational excellence and avoiding unplanned downtime. This position focuses on infrastructure operations, not application or full stack software development.
Responsibilities
Administer, monitor, and troubleshoot Linux systems (primarily Ubuntu and RHEL) across physical and virtual environments, including routine health checks, capacity reviews, and performance tuning.
Build, configure, patch, and maintain VMware ESXi and KVM-based (HPE Morpheus Enterprise HVM) virtualization hosts and clusters alongside the team, including host networking, shared storage connectivity, and hypervisor-level troubleshooting.
Manage virtual machine workloads across VMware vCenter and HPE Morpheus Enterprise, including provisioning, template management, and lifecycle management.
Lead the maturation of the team's IaC practice from the existing Ansible and Terraform framework, including repository structure, coding standards, reusable roles and modules, version control and peer review, and team onboarding.
Develop and maintain Ansible playbooks for configuration management, OS patching, application deployment, and compliance enforcement, along with Terraform configurations for provisioning and lifecycle management of virtual infrastructure across VMware and Morpheus/KVM.
Maintain NetBox as the authoritative source of truth for IPAM, DCIM asset records, and network topology, and integrate it with Ansible to automate routine physical equipment commissioning.
Serve as a Tier 2 escalation point for infrastructure incidents, performing root cause analysis and remediation with the networking, security, and cloud teams, and participate in the on-call rotation.
Follow change management processes, ensuring all changes are documented, reviewed, and approved in alignment with Thrive's ITSM standards.
Define and enforce standardized build documentation, and maintain runbooks, technical documentation, and knowledge base articles.
Requirements
3–5+ years of hands-on Linux system administration experience, with strong proficiency in Ubuntu, including systemd, networking, storage management, and security hardening
3+ years of hands-on VMware vSphere administration, including ESXi host installation, configuration, and patching; vCenter; clusters (HA/DRS); virtual networking (vSwitch/vDS); and datastore management
Hands-on experience administering KVM-based virtualization hosts (QEMU/KVM, libvirt/virsh, Linux bridging, storage pools) on platforms such as HPE Morpheus Enterprise HVM, Proxmox VE, or similar
2+ years of experience using Infrastructure as Code to provision and configure servers, hypervisors, and networking with Ansible (roles, playbooks, inventories) and Terraform (state management, CI/CD plan/apply workflows), along with automation scripting and Git-based version control (GitLab or GitHub)
Solid understanding of networking (TCP/IP, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, routing, firewall rules) and shared storage (iSCSI, NFS, Fibre Channel, multipathing) in virtualized and cloud environments
Experience in datacenter or colocation environments, including racking, cabling, and in-cabinet power management
Proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex system and infrastructure issues independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment with a diverse workload
Strong documentation and communication skills,
including producing accurate, maintainable runbooks, topology diagrams, and change records, and explaining technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Collaborative, automation-first mindset, with the ability to work effectively with peers and cross-functional teams and a drive to improve processes
Knowledge of ITIL and ITSM best practices
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with HPE Morpheus Enterprise for VM provisioning, template management, and self-service automation
Working knowledge of NetBox and its API for IPAM, DCIM, and network source-of-truth management
Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC-1/LPIC-2) or Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Automation with Ansible (RH294) or higher
HashiCorp Terraform Associate (003 or 004)
VMware Certified Professional – Data Center Virtualization (VCP-DCV)
Additional Information
Work Schedule: Standard business hours, with participation in an on-call rotation.
Work Location: Remote eligible.
Travel: Occasional travel for datacenter activities may be required (less than 10%).
