Job Summary

We are seeking a Principal Consultant with 6-11 years of experience in intellectual property, innovation, and business research within the pharmaceutical, healthcare, or biotechnology sectors. The ideal candidate will have a postgraduate qualification in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Life Sciences, or a relevant PhD, along with strong expertise in chemical structure searching, Markush analysis, and STN-based patent research. The role requires strong techno-commercial research capabilities, the ability to translate complex scientific and patent information into actionable insights, and experience managing client-facing consulting engagements.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead and execute IP, innovation, and business research projects for clients across the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and biotechnology sectors.
- Conduct patent landscape, prior-art, freedom-to-operate, novelty, invalidity, chemical structure, substructure, similarity, and Markush searches to support strategic decision-making.
- Develop and execute comprehensive search strategies on STN, including registry, substance, reaction, structure, and Markush searches, and interpret results for pharmaceutical and life sciences projects.
- Perform market, competitor, pipeline, indication, therapy-area, and emerging-technology research using secondary research, patent databases, scientific literature, and commercial sources.
- Evaluate innovation opportunities, whitespace areas, technology trends, partnerships, licensing prospects, and potential growth avenues for clients.
- Synthesize scientific, IP, regulatory, and commercial information into clear insights, recommendations, presentations, and executive-ready reports.
- Manage project scope, timelines, quality, and stakeholder communication; mentor junior team members and contribute to client proposals, capability presentations, and business development initiatives.

Core Competencies

- Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical, healthcare, or biotechnology value chain, including drug discovery, development, commercialization, and evolving industry trends.
- Hands-on experience in IP research and patent analytics, including prior art, FTO, novelty, invalidity, patent landscape, chemical structure search, substructure search, similarity search, and Markush analysis.
- Advanced proficiency in STN, including query formulation, structure and substance searching, Registry/CAS-based searches, Markush retrieval, result analysis, and search documentation. Familiarity with tools such as SciFinder-n, Reaxys, Derwent Innovation, Orbit,



or PatBase will be an advantage.
- Proficiency in business research, market intelligence, competitor benchmarking, company profiling, pipeline analysis, and opportunity assessment.
- Ability to integrate scientific, patent, market, and business information to identify innovation themes, whitespace opportunities, risks, and strategic implications.
- Strong consulting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to structure ambiguous questions, develop research frameworks, and deliver evidence-based recommendations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated experience in preparing high-quality client reports, proposals, and presentations.
- Strong project management skills, including work planning, stakeholder management, quality review, and delivery across multiple concurrent assignments.
- Client-oriented and collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, subject matter experts, and senior stakeholders.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and comfortable mentoring team members while maintaining high standards of accuracy, confidentiality, and delivery excellence.

Postgraduate degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Life Sciences, or a relevant PhD. 6-11 years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical or life sciences IP research, including hands-on chemical structure searching, Markush analysis, STN, patent analytics, innovation consulting, or related business research assignments.
