About the product

We are developing a cloud-based audit assistant tool for professional firms. The platform supports engagement management, client document exchange, working papers, review and approval workflows, and rule-based processing of financial and tax-audit documents.

We are looking for a hands-on engineer to review the existing product, identify technical gaps, implement improvements and prepare it for commercial use by multiple customer organisations.

The role

You will own improvements to application architecture, backend performance, database efficiency, reliability and infrastructure cost. You should be comfortable understanding an existing codebase and making practical, measurable improvements while preserving existing functionality and customer data.

Key responsibilities

- Review the application, database and hosting architecture; maintain a prioritised improvement plan.
- Diagnose slow pages, APIs and database queries using measurements.
- Improve SQL queries, indexes, data access patterns and caching where appropriate.
- Design reliable document-processing workflows, including background jobs, bounded processing, retries and duplicate prevention.
- Plan and conduct realistic load, concurrency and recovery tests.
- Identify infrastructure limits and implement appropriate controls for peak demand.
- Estimate and monitor infrastructure cost per customer and completed workflow.
- Maintain separation of customer data and enforce permissions on the server.
- Improve monitoring, error reporting, alerts, backups and recovery procedures.
- Manage safe deployments,



database migrations and rollback plans.
- Write meaningful automated tests and review code contributed by junior developers.
- Explain technical findings, costs and trade-offs clearly to the business team.

Required experience
- Hands-on ownership of backend features in a live application used by real customers.
- Strong JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js skills.
- Practical SQL knowledge, including schema design, indexing, transactions and query optimisation.
- Experience designing and maintaining APIs, authentication and authorisation.
- Experience investigating production failures or performance problems.
- Familiarity with cloud hosting, object storage, background processing and deployment pipelines.
- Ability to work across the frontend and backend when diagnosing application issues.
- Strong Git, debugging, testing and technical documentation practices.

Preferred experience
- B2B SaaS products serving multiple customer organisations.
- Document-heavy, financial, compliance, ERP or workflow applications.
- Cloudflare Workers, D1 and R2, or comparable serverless platforms.
- React and Next.js.
- Load-testing tools such as k6, JMeter or Locust.
- Measurable improvements to cloud costs,



database performance or application reliability.

Current technology environment The product currently uses TypeScript, React/Next.js-compatible tooling, Cloudflare Workers, D1 and R2. Experience with this exact stack is helpful but not mandatory if you have solid transferable skills.

What success looks like

During the initial period, you will:
- Document the existing architecture and its principal risks.
- Establish baseline performance and infrastructure-cost measurements.
- Deliver prioritised improvements with before-and-after evidence.
- Develop a capacity-testing plan for seasonal demand, initially targeting 1000+ users per day and 100+ concurrent workflows.
- Establish practical monitoring, release and recovery procedures.
