National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER)

Delhi

The National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) invites applications for the position of Associate Fellow at its Centre for Gender and Macroeconomy (CGME). The Centre’s vision is to promote the full, equal, effective, and meaningful participation of women in the economy, including as decision-makers, in India. Closing gender gaps is macro-critical: it benefits everyone. Reducing gender gaps raises economic growth, reduces income and wealth inequality, and fosters greater financial stability. The selected candidate will contribute to the Centre’s research agenda, which spans interconnected themes including women’s labour force participation and quality of employment; gender gaps in wages, skills, assets, and access to finance; women’s entrepreneurship and leadership; the care economy and unpaid work; and the macroeconomic and fiscal implications of gender gaps, including gender-responsive budgeting.

The Associate Fellow will work closely with the Professor and senior colleagues to design and undertake rigorous empirical research, contribute to policy-oriented analysis, and strengthen the Centre’s research and policy engagement. The position will also involve collaboration with researchers across NCAER, engagement with external partners, and contributions to the Centre’s research, advisory, and dissemination activities. The successful candidate will play an important role in advancing CGM’s research agenda and helping establish the Centre as a leading policy-oriented research institution on gender and the economy.. The role is suited to an economist with strong empirical skills, a keen interest in gender and macroeconomic issues, and a commitment to translating rigorous analysis into practical policy advice.

Key Responsibilities:

- Assist the Professor and senior staff in designing and conducting research on one or more of CGME’s core research themes.
- Contribute to analytical studies on gender gaps and their macroeconomic impacts, sectoral and thematic studies, policy notes, and grant-funded research, working closely with senior colleagues and external partners.
- Support the day-to-day implementation of projects, including work planning, data management and coordination, quality control, and communication with internal and external collaborators.
- Produce high-quality research outputs,

including working papers, journal articles, policy reports, and other publications, independently and as part of collaborative teams.
- Prepare policy briefs, presentations, blogs, and other dissemination materials that communicate the Centre’s research findings to policymakers, academic researchers, and wider audiences.
- Support engagement with government counterparts, partner organisations, and academic collaborators through meetings, workshops, and consultations.
- Contribute to proposal development and help expand the Centre’s research portfolio.
- Work with and support Research Associates on assigned projects.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

- PhD in Economics or a closely related field preferred. Exceptionally strong candidates with a master’s degree and substantial relevant experience may also be considered.
- Typically 1 to 5 years of relevant post-qualification experience in applied economic research, policy analysis, or consulting with expertise in at least one domain central to the CGME agenda.
- Strong empirical and analytical skills, with demonstrated ability to work with data and tackle complex policy questions.
- Clear and effective writing skills, with the ability to produce outputs for both technical and policy audiences.
- Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively in a collaborative research environment.
- Positive organisational and time-management skills.

Application Deadline: November 15, 2026. The position will remain open until filled.

Duration of Appointment: Initially for three years, with a provision for renewal.

Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Desirable attributes

- Familiarity with large survey or administrative datasets (e.g. PLFS, NFHS, Time Use Survey), sex-disaggregated data, quasi-experimental methods, or policy modelling would be highly valuable.
- Experience working on gender,

labour market, or women’s economic empowerment issues in India would be an advantage.

The application should include the following:

- Detailed curriculum vitae, including the names and contact details of three professional references.
- Cover letter describing the candidate’s interest in the position and suitability for the role.
