Roles & Responsibilities
Assistant Manager Maintenance (Mechanical & Electrical)
Battery Cell Fabrication Plant
Position Purpose
Support Mechanical & Electrical (M&E;) maintenance activities for production equipment and systems across the entire battery cell fabrication plant. Ensure maximum equipment availability, reliability, and performance to support continuous, high-yield production, cell assembly, electrolyte filling, formation, ageing, and related processes. Drive a proactive maintenance culture that minimises unplanned downtime, protects product quality, and fully supports keeping the lines running.
Reporting & Scope
- Reports to Maintenance - Manager
- Owns end-to-end maintenance of all production machinery and associated M&E; systems (mixers, coaters, dryers, calenders, slitters, stacking/winding machines, electrolyte fillers, formation equipment, conveyors, automation, robotics, etc.).
- Works in close partnership with Production, Process Engineering, Quality, Utilities, EHS, and Planning.
Key Responsibilities 1. Preventive Maintenance (PM) Excellence
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve a comprehensive Preventive Maintenance programme covering all production equipment.
- Establish time-based, usage-based, and condition-based PM schedules aligned with OEM recommendations, process criticality, and failure-mode analysis.
- Ensure 100% on-time completion of PM tasks with high first-time quality.
- Integrate predictive maintenance techniques (vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis, motor current signature, ultrasonic, etc.) to move from reactive to proactive strategies.
- Maintain accurate digital maintenance records (CMMS/EAM system) and equipment history.
2. Corrective Maintenance & Breakdown Response
- Support rapid, structured response to all equipment breakdowns and performance deviations.
- Establish clear escalation protocols, mean-time-to-repair (MTTR) targets, and 247 support coverage for critical production lines.
- Drive rigorous Root Cause Analysis (RCA), 5-Why, Fishbone, and Failure Mode & Effects Analysis(FMEA) for every significant failure.
- Implement permanent corrective and preventive actions to eliminate recurring issues.
3. Periodic Checks of Machine Parameters & Process Capability
- Define and enforce routine verification of critical machine parameters (speeds, tensions, temperatures, pressures, alignment, coating thickness controls, vacuum levels, dew-point interfaces, etc.).
- Establish standard checklists, frequency, acceptance criteria, and documentation for all key process equipment.
- Partner with Process Engineering and Quality to ensure equipment remains within process windows that protect cell quality and yield.
- Trend parameter data to detect early degradation and trigger proactive interventions.
4. Tooling Maintenance & Management
- Own the complete lifecycle of production tooling (dies, rolls, blades, fixtures, jigs, moulds, coating heads, calendaring rolls, electrode tooling, etc.).
- Establish tooling inspection, sharpening/reconditioning, calibration, storage, and tracking systems.
- Define tooling life standards, wear limits, and replacement/refurbishment criteria.
- Ensure quick-change tooling practices and minimise changeover-related downtime.
5. Full Support for Keeping the Lines Running
- Act as the primary technical partner to Production for achieving and sustaining target OEE, throughput, and yield.
- Provide on-floor presence and rapid decision-making during production shifts, especially during ramp-up, new product introduction, or process changes.
- Ensure maintenance activities are planned to minimise disruption (coordinated shutdowns, opportunity maintenance during changeovers or planned stops).
- Maintain high equipment availability, recognising different failure modes and cleanliness/ moisture-sensitivity requirements.
- Support line balancing, bottleneck elimination, and continuous improvement projects that involve equipment modifications or upgrades.
6. Asset Management, Spares & Cost Control
- Own the maintenance budget (labour, spares, contractors, tools, external services).
- Optimise spare-parts inventory using criticality analysis, min-max levels, and consignment where appropriate.
- Manage OEM relationships, service contracts, and technical support agreements.
- Oversee equipment modifications, upgrades, and capital maintenance projects in coordination with Engineering.
7. Safety & Compliance
- Enforce strict safety standards (LOTO, permit-to-work, arc-flash, confined space, machine guarding, hot work, etc.) and a strong safety culture.
- Ensure all maintenance work complies with electrical codes, pressure systems regulations, and internal quality systems.
- Promote knowledge sharing, training, and succession planning within the team.
- Foster seamless collaboration with Production, Utilities, Quality, and Process Engineering.
8. Continuous Improvement & Digitalisation
- Lead reliability-centred maintenance (RCM), Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) pillars, and Lean maintenance initiatives.
- Champion digital tools: CMMS optimisation, IoT sensors, predictive analytics, digital twins, and mobile maintenance execution.
- Support current equipment installation, commissioning, FAT/SAT, and smooth handover to operations.
Key Competencies & Background (Recommended)
- Strong technical expertise in mechanical, electrical, and controls systems used in high-precision continuous manufacturing (battery, semiconductor, film coating, or similar industries preferred).
- Proven experience leading large maintenance organisations in a 247 production environment.
- Hands-on familiarity with CMMS, predictive technologies, and reliability engineering tools.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and cross-functional influencing skills.
- Strong bias for action, data-driven decision making, and ownership of uptime.
