Role Description The Lead Backend AI Engineer will design, develop, and maintain backend systems that power Superfan.ng’s AI-driven learning experiences. This full-time remote role involves architecting and implementing machine learning and NLP services, integrating them with existing infrastructure, and ensuring reliable, secure, and scalable APIs for the mobile and web apps. The person in this role will collaborate closely with product, content, and frontend engineering teams to translate learning and engagement goals into robust backend features, such as personalized quizzes, recommendation engines, and language understanding models. Day-to-day tasks include leading technical design discussions, writing high-quality production code, optimizing model performance, managing data pipelines,



and reviewing code from other engineers. The Lead Backend AI Engineer is also expected to mentor team members, establish best practices for AI and backend development, and contribute to the long-term technical roadmap.
Qualifications

- Strong foundation in Computer Science and Software Development, including data structures, algorithms, distributed systems, and API design.
- Proficiency in Neural Networks and Pattern Recognition, with experience building and deploying machine learning models to production.
- Hands-on expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP), preferably with multilingual or low-resource languages, and familiarity with contemporary NLP frameworks.
- Experience leading backend engineering projects, working with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure), containerization, and CI/CD workflows.
- Comfort working with relational and NoSQL databases, data pipelines, and model monitoring in live systems.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in remote, cross-functional teams, communicate complex technical concepts clearly, and make pragmatic architectural decisions.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Interest in African languages and cultures, and experience in edtech or consumer-facing apps is a plus.
