Job Description

CLEANROOM DESIGN ENGINEER / DESIGN MANAGER

Semiconductor FAB / OSAT Facility

Position

Cleanroom Design Engineer / Design Manager

Experience

Approximately 10 years

Discipline

Cleanroom design, cleanroom HVAC and environmental control

Industry

Semiconductor FAB / OSAT; high-technology cleanroom facilities

Role Type

Design Lead / Mid-Level Manager

Reporting To

Engineering Manager / Design Director

Role Purpose

Lead cleanroom design engineering and interdisciplinary coordination for semiconductor FAB / OSAT projects. Own cleanroom design criteria, airflow and HVAC calculations, equipment selection, technical deliverables, vendor interfaces and review of junior engineers' work.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop and validate cleanroom design basis, room classification schedules, room data sheets, temperature / humidity targets, pressure cascades and environmental control criteria.
- Lead airflow and air-change calculations, heat-load assessments, recirculation and make-up air calculations, air balance strategies and pressure-differential design.
- Lead design of FFU arrays, HEPA / ULPA filtration systems, ceiling grids, return-air paths, recirculation AHUs, make-up air systems and associated ductwork / air distribution.
- Evaluate airflow patterns and contamination-control concepts in relation to process-tool layouts, occupancy, heat generation and room cleanliness requirements.
- Size and select AHUs, fans, coils, filters, FFUs and associated components; review fan static pressure, filtration stages, redundancy, maintainability and access requirements.
- Review HVAC loads, duct sizing, pressure-drop calculations, equipment schedules, room data sheets, air balance schedules and design drawings.
- Coordinate cleanroom architectural systems, including walls, ceilings, doors, pass boxes, air showers, service panels and tool penetrations, with process and construction requirements.
- Lead interdisciplinary BIM coordination and model-review meetings; review models prepared by the BIM / modelling team, identify cleanroom and MEP interface issues, and track clash resolution to closure before IFC release.

The role does not include producing design models.
- Prepare / review technical specifications, datasheets, BOQs / MTOs, technical bid evaluations and vendor submittals; manage technical deviations and interface questions.
- Guide junior engineers and designers, establish quality checks, monitor deliverables and manage engineering priorities against the project schedule.
- Coordinate with commissioning teams on cleanroom airflow balancing, room pressure testing, filtration integrity testing and environmental performance verification requirements.
- Support design risk reviews, resolve RFIs and site queries, and assess technical changes during procurement, installation and commissioning.
- Lead cleanroom design criteria and coordination for areas requiring cleanliness up to ISO Class 3, verifying airflow / air-change requirements, pressure cascades, filtration strategy, recovery considerations and contamination-control interfaces against project and process requirements.
- Evaluate and coordinate AMC control strategy and AMC filter selection based on target airborne molecular contaminants, process risk, required removal performance, filter media compatibility, airflow, pressure drop, service life and vendor recommendations.

Education and Experience

- B.E. / B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering.
- Approximately 10 years of relevant cleanroom HVAC / environmental control design experience, preferably including semiconductor FAB / OSAT or another high-technology cleanroom facility.
- Demonstrated experience leading cleanroom design calculations, layouts, equipment selection, vendor reviews and interdisciplinary coordination.
- Experience reviewing junior engineers' work and managing design deliverables is required.

Technical Knowledge and Software Skills

- Strong knowledge of ISO 14644 cleanroom classification, airflow / air-change criteria, pressure cascades, temperature and humidity control, filtration and contamination control.
- Experience with FFU selection and layout, HEPA / ULPA filtration, AHUs, recirculation air, make-up air,

air balancing and cleanroom architectural interfaces.
- Ability to review AutoCAD drawings and Revit / Navisworks models; working experience with Navisworks for model coordination, clash review and tracking resolution. Model creation is handled by the dedicated BIM / modelling team.
- Working knowledge of HVAC load calculations, fan static pressure, duct pressure loss, filtration pressure drop and equipment selection.
- Knowledge of relevant ASHRAE guidance, ISO 14644, applicable local codes and project-specific semiconductor requirements.
- Strong technical review, vendor management, coordination, planning, communication and team leadership skills.
- Solid knowledge of ISO 14644 cleanroom classification up to ISO Class 3, including airflow patterns, particle-control strategy, filtration, room pressure control and environmental stability.
- Working knowledge of AMC control and AMC filter selection for semiconductor FABs, including contaminant-specific media, removal efficiency, pressure-drop limits, filter configuration, monitoring and replacement strategy.

Coordination and Interfaces

- Lead technical coordination with process-tool, facilities utility, architectural, structural, electrical, fire protection, BIM, construction and commissioning teams.
- Manage cleanroom panel / ceiling suppliers, FFU and filtration vendors, AHU suppliers and specialist cleanroom contractors.
- Resolve design interfaces, technical deviations and vendor comments; report design progress, risks and decisions required to engineering management.

Key Deliverables

- Cleanroom design basis, room data sheets, cleanliness classification schedule and environmental control criteria.
- Airflow and heat-load calculations, air balance schedules, equipment sizing and supporting design calculations.
- Cleanroom HVAC layouts, FFU / HEPA / ULPA layouts as applicable, equipment layouts, sections and coordinated drawing / model review outputs (models prepared by the dedicated BIM / modelling team).
- Technical specifications, equipment datasheets, BOQs / MTOs, vendor submittal reviews and technical bid evaluations, as applicable.
- Design review responses, clash-resolution records, interface registers and support for RFIs / site technical queries.

ISO Class 3 cleanroom design criteria and review records, plus AMC control / filter selection basis, vendor comparison and technical recommendation.
