Learn the trade from someone who has done it for four decades.
Suitman has been making uniforms for Kerala's hotels and companies since 1986. Taj, Leela Kovalam, Hyatt, Mahindra, Chef Pillai. Most of the names that set the standard here come to us first. We have never advertised for business. The work brought it.
We are now expanding our production and opening current centres, and we are building the next generation of our team. We are hiring one designer.
This is an Apprenticeship, Not a Desk Job
You will work directly alongside our founder from your first week. You will sit with him in client meetings at five-star properties. You will stand with him at the fabric table while he decides why one material is right and another is not. You will be on the production floor watching your drawings become four hundred garments.
He will correct you constantly. That is the point. What he knows took four decades to learn and is taught in no college, and we are looking for someone who wants to be taught it. Over your first year you will take on more of this work yourself. By the end of it, you should be handling your own clients.
What you will be doing.
- Attending client meetings and understanding exactly what a hotel or company needs: departments, staff numbers, comfort, laundry, timelines, budget
- Designing uniforms that work for the client's brand, for the person wearing them all day, and for the cost per piece
- Selecting fabrics and preparing full specifications for production
- Coordinating with our stitching unit so that what you designed is what gets delivered
- Presenting designs and samples to clients and handling their feedback
- Keeping proper records for every client so repeat orders are made exactly right
Who we are Looking for?
- A fresh graduate in fashion design,
apparel design or garment technology. Final-year students may apply.
- Someone who understands how a garment is actually made, including pattern, construction and fabric, not only how to draw one
- Eager to learn from an experienced person, and able to take correction without taking it personally
- Presentable and comfortable speaking with senior people at large hotels and companies
- Fluent in English and Malayalam. Hindi is an advantage.
- Willing to travel regularly for client and production work, including outside the state
- Careful and organised. On an order of 400 pieces, a small mistake is an expensive one.
- Someone who wants to see their own design worn by hundreds of people at once, every day, as the face of a brand
Why this work is worth wanting?
A designer who makes one dress makes it for one person, once.
Here, what you draw walks through a hotel lobby four hundred times a day. A guest's first impression of a property is the people standing in it, and how those people look will be your decision. Years from now you will walk into a hotel you worked on and see your own work still on the floor, still holding up.
That is a particular kind of ambition, and not everyone has it. If it is yours, this is the rare job that feeds it early.
Who this is not for?
This is not fashion show work. It is practical industrial design,
and the satisfaction is in solving a real problem well. If your plan is to start your own label in two years, this is not the right place. We are investing a great deal of personal time in this person, and we want someone who wants to build something here.
