Role Overview

The DIY Teacher will be responsible for teaching students of Grades 3 to 9 the fundamentals of Design Thinking and hands-on making. The role involves guiding students through the process of conceptualizing, designing, measuring, selecting materials, building, assembling and testing functional models using materials such as popsicle sticks, cardboard sheets, and wood. The teacher should encourage creativity, problem-solving, practical application and an understanding of how ideas can be transformed into usable products.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct engaging, hands-on DIY sessions for students from Grades 3 to 9.
- Explain concepts and demonstrate construction techniques through clear, step-by-step instructions.
- Guide students in converting their ideas into practical designs and working models.
- Help students understand the properties, strengths and limitations of different materials.
- Teach students basic measurement skills and the use of measuring tools.
- Review and validate student designs before construction to ensure feasibility, stability, functionality and appropriate material usage.
- Encourage students to improve and refine their designs based on feedback.
- Guide students in using hand tools and power tools wherever age-appropriate and permitted, following all prescribed safety procedures.




- Introduce students to basic 3D designing and modelling concepts.
- Guide students in creating straightforward 3D designs using 3D modelling software.
- Guide students through basic 3D printing processes
- Maintain an organized DIY workspace and ensure materials and tools are stored appropriately.
- Monitor material consumption and communicate requirements for replenishment.
- Ensure proper maintenance and safe usage of tools and equipment.

Desired Skills & Competencies

- Strong hands-on skills in DIY, craftwork, woodworking or product making.
- Familiarity working with various materials.
- Basic knowledge of measurement, cutting, joining and assembly techniques.
- Ability to operate and demonstrate power tools safely.
- Knowledge of 3D designing tools such as Tinkercad, Fusion 360 or similar software.
- Familiarity with 3D printers, slicing software and basic 3D printing techniques.
- Good communication and classroom management skills.
- Patience and the ability to work with students across different age groups.
- Willingness to support school events and creative decoration requirements.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

- Diploma or degree in Design, Product Design, Engineering, Fine Arts, Technical Education or a related field.
- Prior experience in DIY, woodworking, maker spaces or hands-on STEM education.
- Experience working with school students or conducting practical workshops would be an advantage.
