About The New School Madurai
The New School Madurai is a thoughtfully designed learning community that blends the developmental wisdom of Waldorf education with the academic rigour of the ICSE curriculum. We believe that the health of the whole child — body, soul, and spirit — is the foundation of genuine learning. Our approach to physical education honours rhythmic movement, connection with the natural world, and the cultivation of inner qualities such as courage, perseverance, and joy.
Role Overview
We are looking for a passionate and skilled Swimming Coach who understands that sport is a vehicle for character development, not just skill acquisition. The Swimming Coach will be responsible for developing and delivering a structured, developmentally appropriate swimming programme for students across age groups, maintaining pool safety and hygiene, and fostering a culture of confidence, cooperation, and respect in and around the water.
The school is growing: the swimming programme currently serves students up to Grade 3, and will expand to include one additional grade each year as the school grows. The successful candidate will therefore need to be not only an excellent coach, but a thoughtful programme builder — someone who can plan ahead, adapt curriculum as new age groups join, and contribute to the long-term vision of aquatic education at The New School Madurai.
In keeping with the school's Waldorf-inspired ethos, the coach is expected to bring warmth, intentionality, and a genuine love for children to their work. Competitive achievement, while valued, is secondary to building a healthy relationship between the child and the water.
Key Responsibilities
Curriculum & Instruction
- Design and deliver age-appropriate swimming lessons for students currently in Grades 1–3, with the programme expanding to include one additional grade each year.
- Develop a multi-year aquatic curriculum roadmap that anticipates the needs of higher grade levels as they are added to the programme.
- Introduce students to the joy of water through imaginative, play-based approaches in the early years, consistent with Waldorf principles.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with special needs or aquaphobia.
Safety & Facilities Management
- Maintain strict aquatic safety standards and enforce pool rules consistently and calmly.
- Conduct regular safety checks of the pool area, equipment, and rescue apparatus.
- Maintain accurate records of student pool attendance, health considerations, and any incidents.
- Coordinate with school administration on pool maintenance schedules and infrastructure needs.
Student Development & Wellbeing
- Build trusting, encouraging relationships with students, particularly those who experience anxiety around water.
- Monitor and document student progress; communicate regularly with class teachers and parents.
- Identify students with potential for competitive swimming and nurture their talent thoughtfully.
- Model calm, confident, and respectful behaviour in all interactions with students and colleagues.
Reporting & Collaboration
- Report directly to the Head of School or an assigned coordinator on all programme matters, student welfare concerns, and facilities issues.
- Participate in staff meetings, school events, and professional development days.
- Collaborate with the physical education team and class teachers on integrated wellness and movement programmes.
- Communicate proactively with parents about their child's progress, upcoming events, and pool safety protocols.
Co-curricular & Community Engagement
- Organise internal swimming events, galas, and inter-house competitions in keeping with the school's community spirit.
- Represent the school at ICSE-affiliated interschool aquatic meets as the programme matures.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Certified swimming instructor or coach (e.g., SFI, KSAFI, AASF, or equivalent national/international certification).
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience teaching or coaching swimming, preferably with children and young people.
- Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain before joining).
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with primary age groups (Grades 1–3 and above).
- Solid communication skills in English and Tamil.
Desirable
- Experience in a progressive, holistic, or alternative school environment.
- Familiarity with Waldorf, Montessori, or Reggio Emilia educational philosophies.
- Experience supporting students with special educational needs in aquatic settings.
- Background in competitive swimming at district, state, or national level.
- Experience building or expanding a new sports programme from the ground up.
Qualities We Value
- Warmth and genuine care for the wellbeing of each child.
- Patience — especially with children who are fearful of water or slow to progress.
- A programme-builder mindset: the ability to plan ahead and grow with the school.
- Professionalism, punctuality, and a collaborative spirit.
- Integrity and reliability in safety-critical environments.
- Sensitivity to cultural and family diversity in Madurai's community.
Working Conditions
- The role involves regular pool-side work in warm and humid conditions.
- Hours align with the school timetable; some early morning or after-school sessions may be required.
- The coach will be part of the Physical Education team and participate in staff meetings, training days, and school events.
Compensation & Benefits
Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and in line with ICSE school norms. The school is committed to building a supportive, growth-oriented faculty culture, and offers opportunities for professional development aligned with both aquatic coaching and holistic education.
