Job Description: A NICU Duty Doctor (often a Resident Medical Officer or Registrar) provides continuous, in office, evidence-based care to critically ill or premature newborns. They conduct physical assessments, perform procedures (intubation, umbilical lines), manage ventilator support, attend high-risk deliveries, and document patient progress while working under consultant supervision. Key Job Responsibilities
- Clinical Care: Monitor and manage NICU patients, ensuring accurate administration of medications and fluids.
- Procedures: Perform procedures such as intubation, CPAP/HFNC management, and central line placement.
- Emergency Response: Attend high-risk deliveries and perform neonatal resuscitation.
- Documentation: Maintain meticulous records of patient vitals, assessments, and treatment plans.
- Communication: Provide updates and emotional support to families, educating them on the newborn’s condition and feeding techniques.
- Collaboration: Coordinate with intensivists, nursing staff, and specialists.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Medical degree (MBBS) with specialization or training in Pediatrics or Neonatology.
- Experience: Experience in a high-level (Level 3 or 4) NICU preferred.
- Skills: Proficiency in neonatal resuscitation, ventilator management, and emergency care.
- Attributes: High level of emotional resilience, quick decision-making, and teamwork capabilities.
Common Shift Structure
- 12-hour or 24-hour shifts, including nights and weekends.
- Immediate, on-site coverage to handle any sudden changes in patient condition.
