Consultant Ophthalmologist – Job Description

Position: Consultant Ophthalmologist
Department: Ophthalmology / Eye Care
Reports To: Medical Director / Head of Department

Key Responsibilities
Diagnose and treat eye diseases, injuries, and vision disorders.
Perform comprehensive eye examinations and interpret diagnostic tests.
Prescribe medications, corrective lenses, and treatment plans.
Conduct ophthalmic surgeries such as cataract, glaucoma, refractive, and retinal procedures (depending on specialization).
Manage pre-operative and post-operative patient care.
Maintain accurate medical records and clinical documentation.
Collaborate with optometrists, nurses, and other healthcare specialists.
Educate patients on eye health, disease prevention, and treatment options.
Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing medical education.

Required Qualifications
MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
MD/MS/DNB in Ophthalmology.
Valid medical registration with the relevant medical council.
Fellowship or subspecialty training (Retina, Cornea, Glaucoma,



Pediatric Ophthalmology, Oculoplasty, etc.) may be preferred.

Experience
Typically 3–10+ years of post-qualification experience, depending on the institution and level of consultant role.
