Role & responsibilities
Diagnosis and staging: Taking tissue samples through biopsies to confirm cancer and to determine the extent of the cancer's spread throughout the body.
Tumor removal: Removing cancerous tumors with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete removal and prevent recurrence.
Lymph node dissection: Removing lymph nodes to determine if cancer has spread and guide future treatment.
Preventive surgery: In some high-risk cases, a surgical oncologist may remove tissue to prevent the development of cancer.
Reconstructive surgery: Performing surgeries to restore a patient's physical appearance and function after a tumor has been removed.
Developing treatment plans: Working with other medical specialists to decide on the most effective treatment path, which may include other treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy.
