POSITION SUMMARY The Assistant Professor in the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprosy will serve as a key teaching and clinical faculty member at SMIMS & Central Referral Hospital, Gangtok, Sikkim. The role requires a committed medical qualified capable of delivering quality undergraduate medical education while managing a robust clinical workload across OPD, IPD, emergency, and Operation Theatre settings. The incumbent will also contribute to research and publication activities as mandated by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

This is an entry-level faculty appointment with strong scope for academic growth within the institution.

CRITICAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

A. Academic & Teaching Responsibilities

Deliver undergraduate (MBBS) theory lectures and clinical classes in Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy as per university curriculum.

Conduct bedside clinical demonstrations, practical sessions, and case-based discussions for MBBS students and interns.

Participate in departmental seminars, journal clubs, and academic activities to foster a learning environment.

Assist in evaluation and assessment of undergraduate students including internal and university examinations.

Cover duties of other Assistant Professors when required to ensure continuity of academic programmes.

B. Clinical Responsibilities

Attend and manage Outpatient Department (OPD) patients during assigned slots, ensuring evidence-based clinical care.

Provide comprehensive inpatient (IPD) dermatology care manage cases admitted under the unit and attend to inpatient referrals from other departments.

Diagnose and manage common skin diseases, sexually transmitted infections,



and leprosy cases.

Attend to emergency dermatology patients during assigned on-call duties.

Participate in scheduled Operation Theatre duties perform and oversee procedures and assist postgraduate trainees.

Maintain accurate clinical documentation and comply with hospital protocols, NABH standards, and patient safety requirements.

C. Research & Publications

Publish research articles in indexed journals as per current NMC requirements.

Submit articles and medical commentary to professional media on a regular basis.

Assist senior faculty and postgraduate students in ongoing research projects, data collection, and analysis.

Complete the NMC-mandated Basic Course in Biomedical Research within the stipulated timeframe if not already completed.

D. Administrative & Other Responsibilities

Assist the Head of Department in routine departmental administrative tasks and planning.

Participate in hospital quality improvement initiatives and NABH accreditation activities.

Engage in Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes and professional development activities.

Undertake any additional responsibilities assigned by the HOD or institutional authorities.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Educational Qualifications

MBBS from a recognized medical institution.

Postgraduate degree: MD / MS / DNB in Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy from a recognized institution.

Teaching / Clinical Experience (as per NMC Regulations)

Candidates must meet one of the following experience criteria:

(a) One year as Senior Resident in Dermatology at a recognized medical institution; OR

Note:



Tutor experience in a medical institution (with PG degree) is considered equivalent to Senior Resident experience; OR

(b) Armed Forces Specialist Medical Officer with at least 1 year teaching experience OR 2 years clinical experience post-PG qualification in the relevant specialty; OR

(c) Non-teaching Consultant / Specialist / Medical Officer with a PG medical degree and at least 2 years of experience in a Government hospital of at least 220 beds (Basic Course in Biomedical Research must be completed within 2 years of appointment); OR

(d) Diploma holders appointed as Senior Residents in a recognized medical institution before 08.06.2017, with total 4 years of SR experience; OR

(e) Diploma holders working as Specialist / Medical Officer in a government medical institution (NMC-recognised teaching programme) with cumulative 6 years of experience.

Regulatory Compliance

Valid registration with State Medical Council or National Medical Commission is mandatory.

Must complete the Basic Course in Biomedical Research (NMC-mandated) if not already completed.

Preference will be given to candidates with prior teaching hospital experience in a recognized university-affiliated institution.
