JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Head Medical Affairs (General Manager Medical Affairs)

Department: Medical Affairs

Reporting To: India Business Head

Location: Mumbai (western subaurbs)

Company: Our Client is a specialty pharmaceutical company committed to developing, manufacturing and marketing quality finished dosages across domestic and international markets. In India, the company has a strong presence across specialty therapy areas including Cardiology, Diabetology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Pain Management, driven by scientific excellence, customer focus and innovation.

Position Summary : The Head Medical Affairs will lead the Medical Affairs function for the India Business by providing strategic medical leadership across all therapy areas. The role will be responsible for developing scientific strategy, strengthening KOL engagement, supporting brand teams with evidence-based medical inputs, enhancing medical education, driving field force capability building, ensuring scientific compliance and establishing company as a trusted scientific partner among healthcare professionals.

The incumbent will work closely with Marketing, Sales, Business Development, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Research and Pharmacovigilance teams to deliver high-quality scientific support that drives business growth while maintaining the highest ethical and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Medical Strategy

- Develop and implement the Medical Affairs strategy aligned with India Business objectives.
- Provide scientific leadership across Cardiology, Diabetology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Pain Management portfolios.
- Identify emerging therapeutic trends and translate them into actionable business opportunities.
- Support recent product planning, lifecycle management and portfolio expansion.

2. Key Opinion Leader (KOL) Engagement

- Build and strengthen long-term relationships with leading national and regional KOLs.
- Develop structured KOL engagement plans across therapy areas.
- Organize scientific advisory boards, expert panels and medical roundtable discussions.
- Facilitate scientific collaborations and investigator interactions.
- Represent Company at major national and international medical conferences.

3. Medical Education & Scientific Communication





- Develop scientifically robust promotional and non-promotional medical content.
- Review promotional literature for scientific accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Create medical slide decks, FAQs, objection handlers, newsletters and scientific updates.
- Lead publication planning and dissemination of scientific evidence.

4. Medical Training

- Design and deliver comprehensive medical training programmes for Sales, Marketing and Field Medical teams.
- Develop disease awareness and product knowledge modules.
- Conduct induction, refresher and advanced scientific training.
- Assess training effectiveness and continuously improve learning outcomes.

5. Marketing & Brand Support

- Partner with Brand Managers in developing evidence-based marketing strategies.
- Provide scientific inputs for product launches and lifecycle management.
- Support development of promotional campaigns, CMEs and customer engagement initiatives.
- Ensure all marketing communication remains scientifically accurate and compliant.

6. Clinical & Scientific Support

- Provide scientific support for post-marketing clinical studies, investigator-initiated studies and observational research.
- Evaluate emerging clinical evidence and competitor developments.
- Generate medical insights to support strategic decision-making.

7. Medical Information

- Establish robust medical information processes for responding to healthcare professional queries.
- Ensure timely, balanced and scientifically accurate responses.
- Develop standard response documents and medical information databases.

8. Compliance & Governance

- Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, UCPMP, NPPA guidelines and company policies.
- Review promotional materials for scientific validity and ethical compliance.
- Maintain high standards of medical governance and documentation.

9. Cross-functional Collaboration

Collaborate closely with:

- Marketing

to ensure scientific alignment across all business initiatives.

10. People Leadership

- Lead, coach and mentor a team of Medical Advisors and Medical Managers.
- Build a high-performance Medical Affairs organization.
- Develop succession plans and individual development plans.
- Foster a culture of scientific excellence, collaboration and continuous learning.

Education

Essential

- MBBS

Preferred

- MD Pharmacology

Experience

- 15–20 years of pharmaceutical industry experience.
- Minimum 8–10 years in Medical Affairs.
- At least 5 years in a leadership role managing Medical Affairs teams.
- Experience in specialty therapies such as Cardiology, Diabetology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology or Pain Management.
- Strong exposure to Medico-Marketing, KOL management and scientific training.
- Experience supporting product launches and lifecycle management.
