Role Overview The Senior SAP ABAP Consultant is a senior individual-contributor and technical leadership role responsible for designing, developing, optimizing, and supporting custom SAP solutions across implementation, upgrade, migration, and production-support engagements.
The position requires 810 years of hands-on SAP ABAP development experience, strong ownership of complex technical deliverables, and the ability to translate functional requirements into reliable, maintainable, and performance-efficient solutions.
The employer is an expanding enterprise SaaS product organization focused on AI-enabled digital assurance and collaborative, cross-functional engineering.
Reporting through a flat, matrixed structure to senior technical and delivery leadership, the consultant will lead technical discussions, guide junior developers, and work closely with functional consultants, Basis teams, business stakeholders, and client-facing teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and implement SAP ABAP programs covering reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, and forms as complete RICEF deliverables.
- Translate approved business and functional requirements into clear technical specifications, solution designs, development estimates, and executable implementation plans.
- Develop and maintain custom SAP applications using ABAP Objects, object-oriented design principles, ALV reporting, reusable classes, interfaces, and structured exception handling.
- Build enhancements using BAPIs, BADIs, User Exits, Customer Exits, Enhancement Spots, and the SAP Enhancement Framework while protecting solution stability and upgrade compatibility.
- Engineer integrations using IDocs, RFCs, SOAP or REST web services, OData services, and proxies supporting PI/PO-connected landscapes where applicable.
- Create and maintain Smart Forms, SAPscript, and Adobe Forms, ensuring accurate output logic, layouts, data handling, and production reliability.
- Review peer code for correctness, readability, security, reuse, transport readiness, and adherence to established ABAP coding and documentation standards.
- Optimize existing and newly developed programs through disciplined debugging, SQL and runtime analysis, efficient internal-table processing, and performance-tuning practices.
- Support SAP S/4HANA migration or implementation activities, including ABAP on HANA development using CDS Views and AMDP where the project scope requires them.
- Diagnose production incidents, perform root-cause analysis, implement permanent fixes, and communicate resolution status clearly to technical and business stakeholders.
- Document technical specifications, program logic, interface mappings, unit-test plans, test evidence, deployment dependencies, and support handover information.
- Mentor junior ABAP developers through design guidance, code reviews, debugging support, technical knowledge sharing, and reinforcement of delivery best practices.
- Collaborate with functional, Basis, business, quality, and client-facing teams to deliver end-to-end SAP implementation, upgrade, enhancement, and support outcomes.
Required Qualifications A completed Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related field is mandatory.
The candidate must be able to substantiate the academic qualification through completed credentials and demonstrate an applied foundation in programming, systems analysis, software engineering, or enterprise application development.
No SAP certification is mandatory for eligibility; relevant SAP ABAP or SAP S/4HANA development certification will be treated as a value-added credential.
Required Experience A total of 8–10 years of relevant, hands-on SAP ABAP development experience is required. Relevant experience must include direct ownership of development, enhancement, integration, debugging, performance, documentation, and production-support activities rather than observation-only or coordination-only exposure.
The candidate should have completed work across end-to-end SAP implementation, upgrade, migration, enhancement, and support assignments, with demonstrable delivery of RICEF objects and custom SAP solutions in production environments.
Experience collaborating with functional consultants and business stakeholders is essential. Prior consulting, client-facing, technical work-stream leadership, or small-team leadership experience is preferred.
Professional exposure within established SAP consulting, enterprise technology, IT product development, or large-scale client delivery environments is relevant to the role.
Technical and Functional Skills
- Advanced SAP ABAP development capability, including procedural ABAP and ABAP Objects with sound object-oriented concepts.
- Strong RICEF delivery experience covering reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, and forms.
- Hands-on development using ALV reports, BAPIs, BADIs, User Exits, Customer Exits, Enhancement Spots, and the Enhancement Framework.
- Integration development using IDocs, RFCs, SOAP or REST web services, OData services, and proxies; PI/PO integration exposure is beneficial.
- Production experience with Smart Forms, SAPscript, and Adobe Forms development and maintenance.
- Strong debugging, root-cause analysis, code optimization, and performance-tuning capability.
- Ability to create technical specifications, unit-test plans, test evidence, transport notes, and maintainable technical documentation.
- Working understanding of at least one SAP functional module: SD, MM, FICO, PP, or WM.
- Practical knowledge of SAP Transport Management System and disciplined movement of changes across SAP landscapes.
- Capability to perform code reviews, enforce coding standards, identify reusable patterns, and improve maintainability.
- Understanding of Agile or Scrum delivery practices and cross-functional execution is preferred.
- Working knowledge of version-control approaches, including Git for ABAP where adopted, is beneficial.
Soft Skills and Behavioural Competencies
- Demonstrates structured analytical thinking and resolves complex defects through evidence-based debugging and root-cause analysis.
- Communicates technical concepts clearly to developers, functional consultants, business stakeholders, and client-facing teams.
- Exercises ownership from requirement clarification through development, testing, deployment, stabilization, and documentation.
- Mentors junior developers constructively and improves team quality through reviews, coaching, and knowledge sharing.
- Balances multiple priorities while protecting delivery commitments, coding quality, and production stability.
- Collaborates effectively in a flat, matrixed workplace and remains responsive to cross-functional dependencies.
- Shows sound judgment during production incidents and escalates risks, assumptions, and dependencies transparently.
- Adapts to changing project needs while maintaining professional discipline, attention to detail, and customer focus.
Preferred or Value-Added Qualifications
- Hands-on SAP S/4HANA implementation or migration experience, particularly ABAP on HANA development.
- Development experience with CDS Views, AMDP, and ABAP Managed Database Procedures.
- Working knowledge of SAP Fiori or UI5 backend development and OData service development.
- Experience developing or supporting SAP Workflow solutions.
- Exposure to SAP Business Technology Platform.
- Relevant SAP certification in ABAP or SAP S/4HANA development.
- Prior consulting or client-facing delivery experience involving technical discussions and stakeholder management.
- Experience leading small technical teams, development work streams, reviews, or delivery checkpoints.
- Practical experience using Git for ABAP or comparable version-control practices alongside SAP transports.
Professional Tenure and Background The expected career progression is from hands-on ABAP development into senior consultant responsibilities involving complex solution ownership, technical design, code quality, stakeholder collaboration, mentoring, and production accountability. Suitable candidates should demonstrate sustained professional experience within established organizations that follow mature SAP delivery, change-control, testing, documentation, and support practices. Resumes should show measurable work accomplishments, such as independently delivered RICEF objects, successful integrations, performance improvements, production fixes, migration contributions, or leadership of defined technical work streams.
Frequent role changes without evidence of completed deliverables, or profiles dominated by coordination without hands-on development, would not represent the preferred background.
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is experience-aligned and determined through a structured internal approach considering relevant tenure, current CTC, demonstrated skill depth, role complexity, interview performance, market demand, and internal salary parity. Offer decisions are reviewed through a standardized 25-parameter internal assessment without disclosing fixed salary bands in the hiring document.
Applicable benefits, leave, statutory coverage, and other employment provisions will be governed by prevailing organizational policy and communicated during the formal offer process.
