Role Purpose
Provides technical leadership for catalytic Methanation section during Pre-FEED, BDEP, and FEED phases of the Syngas-to-SNG project;
scope covers fixed-bed reactor systems, recycle gas compression, inter-stage cooling, and SNG product conditioning
Leads evaluation and selection of methanation technology licensors (e.G., Topsoe TREMP, JM, or equivalent);
ensures technical integrity of process deliverables. Manages and coordinates with the technologists.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technology selection and evaluation for the Methanation section — fixed-bed adiabatic reactor systems, recycle gas compression, inter-stage heat recovery, and SNG conditioning train;
establish technology selection criteria covering catalyst type, activity, poison tolerance, and thermal management;
evaluate licensor proposals (TREMP, HICOM, or equivalent) and drive technology selection recommendations.
- Define SNG product quality targets — CH₄ content, Wobbe index, heating value, CO₂ and H₂O limits — and ensure methanation system design meets grid injection or end-use specifications
- Coordinate and manage discipline Technologists;
assign work, review outputs, and ensure technical consistency across disciplines
- Review licensor technology proposals, process descriptions, and datasheets;
challenge technical claims and assess performance guarantees
- Lead preparation of Technical Bid Evaluations (TBE) for technology packages;
drive licensor selection recommendations
- Review Pre-FEED deliverables (process basis, heat & mass balances, technology selection reports)
- Lead PFD and P&ID; review;
ensure completeness, technical accuracy, and operability
- Lead and coordinate HAZID and HAZOP;
ensure all actions are documented and closed
- Oversee catalyst selection, loading philosophy, activation procedures, and life estimation;
manage catalyst vendor interactions and performance guarantee compliance - Review heat integration between methanation reactors and upstream units (CO shift, AGR);
optimise inter-stage steam generation and heat recovery across the methanation train
- Review and approve BDEP and FEED deliverables for Methanation section
- Review and approve equipment specifications, process design basis, and vendor data
- Identify long lead equipment;
provide technical inputs for equipment specifications and procurement strategy
- Interface with Configuration Optimization team to ensure alignment of technology inputs with overall project configuration
- Maintain awareness of advances in Ni-based methanation catalyst formulations — high-temperature stability, poison resistance, and regeneration options;
contribute technology benchmarking insights
Key Skills & Competencies
- Deep technical knowledge of catalytic methanation processes — adiabatic fixed-bed reactor design, recycle gas compression, inter-stage cooling, SNG product conditioning, and Ni-based catalyst management (activity, selectivity, poison tolerance, and regeneration)
- Understanding of SNG product specifications — CH₄ content, Wobbe index, HHV,
CO₂/H₂O limits — and ability to ensure methanation design meets grid injection or industrial end-use requirements
- Knowledge of methanation catalyst behaviour under UCG syngas variability;
ability to assess performance under transient and off-specification feed conditions
- Proven experience in technology evaluation, TBE preparation, and licensor/vendor selection for process technology packages
- Process design review expertise — PFDs, P&IDs;, heat & mass balances, and equipment datasheets
- Solid technical leadership and team management;
experience coordinatingmulti-discipline technical teams
- Experience in HAZID/HAZOP facilitation
- Proficiency in process simulation tools (Aspen HYSYS, Pro/II, or equivalent);
experience in modellingexothermic reactor systems and heat integration for methanation trains
- Knowledge of BDEP and FEED deliverable requirements;
understanding of project lifecycle for major capital projects
- Strong communication and stakeholder management;
ability to present technical recommendations to senior management
- Familiarity with applicable HSE standards, codes (ASME, API, IBR), and statutory compliance requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
- B.E./B.Tech in Chemical Engineering
- 15–20 years (Grade F) / 10–15 years (Grade G) in gas processing, SNG, or synthetic fuels technology, with demonstrated experience in methanation process design;
minimum 5 years in a technical lead role
- Experience in Pre-FEED, BDEP, and FEED phases for process plants;
TBE and licensor selection experience required;
hands-on experience with methanation or SNG process design preferred.
