About The Role The Product Safety – Specialist Raw Substances role at Lonza is a pivotal position focused on ensuring the safe and compliant management of raw materials used across various manufacturing processes. As a key member of the product safety team, you will evaluate health and environmental hazard data associated with raw substances supplied to Lonza facilities.
Your responsibilities will include managing Safety Data Sheets (SDS) within SAP EHS systems, monitoring regulatory changes, and providing hazard communication support to facilitate safe operations. This role requires a proactive approach to regulatory compliance, including adherence to GHS, REACH, CLP, and other regional and international chemical regulations. The specialist will collaborate with cross-functional teams, providing subject matter expertise to support product safety initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.
Your work will directly contribute to Lonza’s ability to operate safely, remain compliant, and uphold its reputation for quality and safety in the life sciences industry.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Science, or a related natural science field, with a preferred specialization in Toxicology. Candidates should have 1 to 4 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical or chemical industry, demonstrating familiarity with regulatory compliance processes and SAP systems.
Experience with chemical hazard assessment, SDS management, and understanding of global chemical regulations such as REACH and CLP is highly desirable. Proficiency in English and German is required for effective communication within international teams and external stakeholders.
Certifications or knowledge of GHS regulations and regional chemical directives will be considered an advantage, reflecting your commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and compliance.
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with GHS classification standards for purchased products and raw materials, reviewing supplier SDS to align with regional chemical regulations such as REACH and CLP.
- Maintain and update supplier SDS within SAP EHS and S/4HANA systems, monitoring regulatory changes to ensure data accuracy and timely hazard communication.
- Extract and document intrinsic physical, health, and environmental hazards of chemical substances, entering relevant data into SAP EHS systems for proper risk assessment.
- Support updates to SAP tools based on regulatory changes, ensuring hazard data remains current and compliant with evolving standards.
- Monitor SAP system activities related to raw material status changes, such as purchase, shipment,
or sale, to ensure accurate data management.
- Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding the regulatory status and safety profiles of raw materials, providing clear and accurate information.
- Act as a subject matter expert in product safety, offering guidance and expertise during cross-functional projects and initiatives.
- Contribute to process improvements and compliance initiatives, supporting the continuous optimization of product safety functions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the overall objectives of the product safety team and ensure seamless operations.
