About this role

As an established member of a Hosting team, the Principle Engineer independently delivers, operates, and improves the team's services, with a focused emphasis on designing, building, managing, delivering and influencing those services through code and automation. The role takes ownership of well-defined pieces of work end-to-end and contributes to the reliability, security, and continuous improvement of the team's service domain.

What youll do

- Database Administration: Manage, monitor, and maintain Oracle, SQL Server, Redis, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL databases to ensure optimal performance, availability, and security.
- Performance Tuning: Analyse and optimise database performance by identifying and resolving performance bottlenecks, tuning queries, and implementing best practices for each database platform.
- Backup and Recovery: Develop and implement comprehensive backup and recovery strategies for each database platform to ensure data integrity and minimise downtime in the event of system failures or disasters.
- Security Management: Implement and enforce database security policies, access controls, and encryption mechanisms across all database platforms to protect sensitive data from unauthorised access or breaches.
- Database Design and Development: Collaborate with development teams to design, develop, and deploy database solutions that align with business requirements and performance standards for each database platform.
- Capacity Planning: Conduct capacity planning assessments for each database platform to ensure sufficient resources are available to support current and future workloads.
- Troubleshooting and Support: Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to resolve database-related issues and incidents across all database platforms in a timely manner.
- Automation:



Identify opportunities for automation and implement tools/scripts to streamline database administration tasks and enhance operational efficiency across all database platforms.
- Escalation Point: Serve as the escalation point for all areas of the business for database support, including participating in a 24*7 on-call rotation.
- Database Build Standards: Work closely with the Database Product Lead to ensure that database build standards and reference architectures exist for all types of databases in the estate and that all builds and detailed designs conform to these standards.

What youll bring

- Approximately 10+ years of commercial experience in a dedicated engineering role within complex, enterprise-scale environments.
- Code-Driven Practices: Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience utilising code-driven methodologies (such as Infrastructure as Code, Configuration as Code, or automated scripting languages) to manage and scale platforms.
- Legacy to Modern Transitions: Direct experience migrating legacy systems or manual operational workflows over to modern, highly automated, and resilient target-state architectures.
- Incident Ownership & SRE Practice: Demonstrated experience leading root-cause analysis (RCA) investigations and implementing permanent engineering fixes to eliminate systemic operational toil.
- Secure Engineering Practice: Proven experience hardening enterprise environments against cyber threats and a track record of successfully driving rapid patch management or vulnerability remediation campaigns in production environments.
- Squad-Based Delivery: Proven experience working within an Agile framework, Product-operating model, or DevOps squad environment, collaborating daily with Product Owners and Scrum Masters to deliver platform features.
