The Mandhata
Island, formed by the bifurcating Narmada River, naturally resembles the sacred syllable OM when viewed from above—a divine geometry recognized in ancient scriptures. According to the Shiva Purana, the Vindhya mountains performed intense penance here, and pleased with the devotion, Shiva manifested in twin forms: Omkareshwar on the island and Amareshwar on the southern bank. The temple complex dates back to the 12th century with exquisite Paramara dynasty architecture.
