1. Core Responsibilities
Risk Assurance Testing and Assurance Programme
- Independently deliver and lead timely and robust Risk & Controls Testing and Assurance reviews across the Group to assess the controls and programmes to confirm that the Group is operating within its policies and procedures and in line with applicable laws and regulation. This includes the assessment of customer outcome across the full product lifecycle when necessary.
- Ensure that Controls assessments are performed on risk-based testing plans aligned with emerging risks, and regulatory requirements, adapting them as necessary to respond to new risks, regulatory and business changes.
- Managing the closure and standard of response to the actions agreed from Risk & Controls testing and Assurance reviews. Recording operational management responses and evidence, tracking progress and conducting proportionate follow up validation assessments.
- Responsible for the delivery of Risk and Controls Testing and assigned Assurance reviews inline with internal quality standards whilst adhering to the Risk Assurance Methodology. This includes overseeing the performance of your team members and support other colleagues, where required, to meet these requirements.
- Ensure stakeholders awareness of emerging findings consistently throughout the course of review to deliver a ‘no-surprise’ outcome.
- Prepare well written draft reports that provide holistic information and key recommendations that add value to business performance and outcome.
- Work with the Senior Compliance Quality Assurance and Training & Development Manager to lead control testing and assurance excellence, apply best practices and implement process enhancement.
- Deputise for Group Head of Risk Assurance and other Senior Leadership team where required for Risk & Controls testing and other Assurance reviews and engagements.
- Undertake Material Controls testing in line with approved methodology and report outcome to Risk Assurance Leadership.
Risk Assessment and Management
- Play an active part in annual risk assessments, in collaboration with the Risk Assurance Senior Leadership team, identifying, quantifying, and prioritising risks.
- Monitor regulatory developments and changes in the industry to adapt and update assurance methodologies accordingly.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
- Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders, including Risk, Audit, Legal, and Operations, to support a strong compliance culture across the organisation.
- Communicate key findings, risks, and issues to senior Risk Assurance leadership, providing recommendations for risk mitigation and improvement.
- Act as an ambassador,
ensuring that business units understand requirements and are engaged in Risk Assurance efforts across all levels.
Team Leadership and Development
- Manage Risk & Controls Officers and Sr. Officers, providing mentorship, support, and direction to ensure high-quality work and professional development.
- Supervise the work performed by reporting staff and review documentation to ensure the quality of deliverables, adequacy of testing and recommend development actions to leadership team.
- Coordinate with the Risk Assurance Senior Compliance Quality Assurance and Training & Development Manager to drive continuous improvement and plan professional development for team members. Develop subject matter expertise in core UK banking areas applicable for the bank.
- Provide constructive, open and timely feedback to support personal and career development of team members to help achieve their full potential enabling them to perform tasks as expected and enhance overall performance and meet goals.
- Contribute to develop and delivery of training for Risk and Controls team members on testing methodologies, emerging practices, and regulatory changes.
- Foster a collaborative and compliant culture, building robust relationships within the Risk Assurance team and across other departments.
- Act as an ambassador for the bank’s compliance and conduct risk culture and standards, always demonstrating the highest standards of behaviours and integrity. Champion the Groups Purpose, Vision, and Values

- Maintain the company’s compliance standards and ensure timely completion of all mandatory on-line training modules and attestations.
2. Experience Requirements
- 7-8 years (or comparable)
previous assurance experience working in a Risk and Controls testing or Internal Audit within a regulated lending or banking environment is essential
- 7-8 years (or comparable) demonstrable experience of critically analysing information and bringing out clear implications is essential
- 7-8 years (or comparable) experience of the development of management information for multiple audiences is desirable
- 7-8 years (or comparable) previous exposure to and understanding of operational functions and projects such as product development, operational processes and other tactical business changes is desirable
- 5 years’ experience in supervising and managing a team including coaching, training and development is essential
3. Knowledge Requirements
- Knowledge of risk and controls and emerging best practices is essential, and experience of Material Controls assessments is desirable.
- Knowledge of the current FCA regulatory expectations in respect to conduct risk, and customer outcomes together with the latest industry responses to those expectations is essential.
- Detailed knowledge of the MCOB, BCOBS, SYSC, PRIN, COCON handbooks and UK GDPR as well as financial crime regulations is essential.
- Understanding of controls in Mortgages Origination, Secured Loan, Savings Products, Mortgage Servicing and other Business Processes is essential.
- In-depth understanding of regulatory requirements, compliance risk assessment methodologies, and industry best practices in compliance assurance is desirable.
4. Skill and Competency Requirements
- Very good communication skills at all levels, both written and verbal, are essential.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to interpret complex regulatory and compliance data is essential.
- Proficient in using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are essential.
- Good understanding of and ability to interpret the FCA/PRA regulation and industry body guidance, along with other critical regulatory areas.
- Excellent organisational skills, ability to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively.
- Proven ability to manage, mentor, and develop a team, fostering a team-oriented and high-performing compliance culture.
- Proven experience of successfully establishing effective stakeholder relationships is essential.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy, especially when dealing with compliance testing and audit documentation.
- Upholds strong ethical standards, maintains confidentiality, and demonstrates a commitment to compliance integrity.
5. Required Qualifications/Certifications
- Degree or equivalent qualifications are essential.
- Relevant professional qualifications from Risk & Controls, Audit and Compliance disciplines are desirable.
