This is a strategic, high-impact role where you will own the entire SQL Server ecosystem and act as a technical authority for database reliability and automation.

Role Overview

This is not a traditional DBA role; it is a SQL Infrastructure Lead position. You will be the go-to expert for designing and maintaining high-availability clusters, troubleshooting the most complex linked server performance problems, and automating away manual toil. You will work closely with US-based SRE, DevOps, and Engineering teams during Eastern Time hours, ensuring seamless 24x7 operational coverage for mission-critical databases.

Detailed Key Responsibilities

- High Availability & Disaster Recovery Architecture (30%)
- Architect, deploy, and manage enterprise-grade HA/DR solutions using Always On Availability Groups across multi-subnet, geo-redundant configurations.
- Configure and troubleshoot Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) , including quorum models, node evictions, and split-brain scenarios.
- Own the disaster recovery strategy: define RPO/RTO objectives, design and execute automated DR drills, and maintain runbooks for regional failovers.
- Manage and monitor Log Shipping and Transactional Replication topologies, resolving latency, blocking, and sync issues rapidly.
- Linked Servers & Cross-Platform Connectivity (20%)
- Architect complex, heterogeneous linked server environments connecting SQL Server to Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and cloud-based data warehouses.
- Deeply troubleshoot sluggish cross-platform queries by analyzing distributed query execution plans, OLEDB/ODBC driver behaviors, and network latency.
- Harden linked server security through constrained delegation, Kerberos authentication, and principle of least privilege on outbound connections.
- Maintain a stable catalog of linked servers, retiring unused links, standardizing provider strings, and documenting dependencies.
- Performance Tuning & Troubleshooting (25%)
- Lead major incident response for database performance degradation; perform real-time RCA using DMVs, Query Store, Extended Events, and third-party monitors (Redgate, SolarWinds DPA, SentryOne).
- Analyze and refactor complex, slow-running queries, implement missing indexes, and resolve parameter sniffing/plan regression issues using Query Store plan forcing.




- Conduct deep-dive Wait Statistics analysis to identify systemic bottlenecks (PAGELATCH, CXPACKET, THREADPOOL) and collaborate with storage/virtualization teams to resolve them.
- Define and implement a proactive baseline for key metrics (Batch Requests/sec, Page Life Expectancy, CPU queue length) and alert before thresholds are breached.
- Automation, IaC & DevOps Enablement (15%)
- Own the automation roadmap: remove all manual DBA tasks through PowerShell scripting, including instance builds, patching, configuration drift remediation, and backups health reporting.
- Implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) patterns for database deployments using Terraform, Azure DevOps CI/CD pipelines, and database migration tools (Redgate Deploy, DbUp, or Flyway).
- Automate daily health reports using Brent Ozar’s First Responder Kit and native DMV queries, pushing results into monitoring dashboards.
- Drive self-service capabilities for development teams—automated environment refreshes, permission grants, and schema change deployments.
- Security, Compliance & Lifecycle Management (10%)
- Implement and manage database security controls: Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), Always Encrypted, column-level encryption, and robust auditing via SQL Server Audit and Extended Events.
- Lead version upgrades and migrations (SQL Server 2016 to 2019/2022) and lift-and-shift migrations to Azure SQL Managed Instance with minimal cutover windows.
- Perform rigorous capacity planning: forecast storage, CPU, and memory growth; recommend right-sizing of instances and compute tiers.

Essential Qualifications

- 7+ years of total IT experience, with at least 5 years focused exclusively on SQL Server Infrastructure/DBA.
- 2+ years in a Lead or Senior-most DBA role, serving as the final technical escalation point.
- Mastery of PowerShell for SQL Server automation—you must have scripts or modules you have authored and can discuss in detail.
- Proven, hands-on experience resolving a major linked server outage or performance meltdown in production.
- Exceptional English communication skills (C1/C2 proficiency level): you will be speaking on technical bridge calls, writing RCAs, and presenting architectural decisions to US-based stakeholders daily.
- Work Overlap Commitment: Must be willing to work core hours overlapping with US Eastern Time Zone (typically 6:30 PM to 3:30 AM IST, exact schedule can be refined).
