Position: General Manager – Instrumentation, Automation & Digitalization

Position Overview The General Manager – Instrumentation, Automation & Digitalization will serve as the Owner's technical authority for Instrumentation, Control Systems, Automation, Functional Safety, Digitalization, and Industrial Communication Systems for the integrated Coal Gasification, Fertilizer, Chemical, Utilities, and Offsite facilities.

The role is responsible for reviewing, approving, and guiding all instrumentation, automation, and digital engineering deliverables prepared by PMC, EPC Contractors, Technology Licensors, Consultants, and Vendors. The incumbent will ensure secure, reliable, and efficient plant operations while driving automation, cybersecurity, process optimization, and digital transformation throughout the project lifecycle—from concept development to commissioning and commercial operations.

Experience

- Minimum 20 years of experience in Instrumentation, Control Systems, Automation, and Digitalization.
- At least 10 years in senior leadership roles within large industrial projects.
- Experience handling projects valued above INR 5,000 Crores .
- Participation in at least two complete project life cycles from concept to commercial operation.
- Experience with Owner's Engineering, PMC, EPC Contractors, Technology Licensors, or Operating Companies.
- Strong expertise in DCS, SIS, PLC, SCADA, Functional Safety, Advanced Process Control, and Industrial Automation.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and contractors.

Preferred Industry Experience Experience in Coal Gasification, Fertilizer, Petrochemical, Refinery, Hydrogen, Methanol, LNG, Power, Industrial Gas, or Chemical Manufacturing projects.

Key Responsibilities





Instrumentation & Automation Leadership

- Lead instrumentation, automation, control systems, and digitalization activities across the project lifecycle.
- Develop engineering standards, automation philosophies, and digital transformation strategies.
- Provide technical leadership to PMC, EPC Contractors, Consultants, and Vendors.

Instrumentation & Control Systems Engineering

- Review and approve instrumentation engineering deliverables, including instrument specifications, datasheets, control philosophies, I/O lists, control valve sizing, analyzer systems, and related documentation.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, international standards, and engineering best practices.

Automation & Functional Safety

- Lead engineering reviews of Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), PLC, SCADA, Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD), and Burner Management Systems (BMS).
- Oversee SIL studies, Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF), Cause & Effect development, and ensure compliance with IEC 61508, IEC 61511, ISA, and company safety standards.

Digitalization & Process Optimization

- Drive implementation of Advanced Process Control (APC), Digital Twins, Industrial IoT, Predictive Maintenance, Plant Information Systems, Asset Performance Management (APM), Historian Systems, AI-based monitoring, and performance analytics.
- Support operational excellence, process optimization, energy efficiency, and digital transformation initiatives.

Industrial Communication Systems





- Review and approve telecommunications, fiber optic networks, CCTV, access control, public address systems, and industrial communication networks to ensure seamless integration with plant automation systems.

Project Execution & Vendor Management

- Act as the Owner's representative for instrumentation and automation engineering.
- Review contractor deliverables, resolve technical issues, support vendor evaluation, and coordinate with licensors, consultants, PMC, and EPC Contractors.

Construction, Commissioning & Start-Up

- Support installation, commissioning, loop checking, Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), integrated system testing, start-up, and performance testing.
- Ensure successful commissioning and reliable operation of automation and control systems.

Operational Readiness

- Develop maintenance strategies, lifecycle management plans, operating procedures, and training programs for operations and maintenance teams.
- Ensure plant readiness for safe and reliable commercial operation.

Qualification & Certifications

- Bachelor's Degree in Instrumentation Engineering, Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, or equivalent from a recognized university.
- Master's Degree in Instrumentation, Automation, Control Systems, Industrial Electronics, or Process Control Engineering.

Professional certifications such as ISA CAP, TÃœV Functional Safety Engineer, PMP, IEC 61511, or equivalent
