Client is a Mumbai-based nonprofit that empowers women living in poverty to become leaders in their workplaces, their homes, and their communities. Women affiliated with the NGO work as artisans in cooperatives producing apparel and accessories for our U.S.-based nonprofit partner.
What sets the NGO apart is our philosophy: our programs are designed and driven by the women themselves — not by staff. Staff support and guide; women lead. This model has driven real, measurable change at the family and community level for years, and we're looking for someone who believes in it as deeply as we do.
JOB POSITION: DIRECTOR/ASST.DIRECTOR
JOB LOCATION: SANTACRUZ MUMBAI The Role
As Director, you'll lead a team of seven — social workers, a para-skilled, coaching-class teachers, a therapist, and administrative staff — across our cooperatives in Santa Cruz (E), Nallasopara, and Thane, working out of our head office in Santa Cruz (E).
You'll oversee three flagship programs:
- Darpan — self-development through yoga, Zumba, newspaper reading, and more
- Social Action — community development, including an active plastic recycling initiative
- Armaan Club — a robust children's program supporting school success through tutorials, camps, dance, and math classes
Beyond programs, you'll manage and grow our artisan cooperatives — helping women understand their roles, resolving conflicts as they arise, and building new cooperatives as we expand. You'll also take ownership of our finances and compliance — budgeting, reporting,
and ensuring we stay fully compliant with FCRA and Charity Commissioner regulations, since we receive funding from our U.S. partner.
What You'll Do
- Lead and continuously improve all the programs, always in service of the organization's participatory philosophy
- Manage and grow the artisan cooperatives across all three locations
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of seven
- Oversee the Education for Life initiative
- Manage organizational finances and ensure regulatory compliance (FCRA, Charity Commissioner, and related frameworks)
What We're Looking For
- A Master's degree in Social Work, Development, Social Entrepreneurship, or Management
- 5+ years of management experience and 8–10 years of field experience
- A track record of building strategy, analyzing programs, and leading change
- Working knowledge of financial management, budgeting, and reporting
- Familiarity with FCRA compliance and Charity Commissioner regulations; experience with the regulatory framework for Indian nonprofits is a strong plus
- Fluency in Hindi and English (spoken and written); Marathi a plus
- Comfort with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Most importantly: a genuine, innate respect for women and their potential. This isn't a role for a paternalistic or charity-minded approach — we're looking for someone who sees the women we work with as leaders. Mail cvs to :
