Position Title - PostgreSQL Database Developer

Experience Required - 2 - 5 Years

Database Version -PostgreSQL 17

Department - Software Engineering

Employment Type- Full-Time

1. Position Summary

We are looking for a skilled PostgreSQL Database Developer with 25 years of hands-on experience in designing, developing, and optimizing PostgreSQL databases for enterprise applications. The ideal candidate should possess strong expertise in relational database design, SQL, PL/pgSQL programming, query optimization, and database performance tuning. The role requires working closely with application developers, architects, and infrastructure teams to build scalable, secure, and high-performing database solutions.

2. Key Responsibilities

- Design and build PostgreSQL schemas, tables, views and indexes that hold up as data volume grows, not just at demo scale.
- Write efficient SQL and PL/pgSQL stored procedures, functions, triggers and know when not to use them.
- Turn data model specs and LLDs into clean, production-ready DDL without back-and-forth.
- Get into EXPLAIN/EXPLAIN ANALYZE regularly to find and fix slow queries before they become a problem in production.
- Keep an eye on overall database health bloat, autovacuum behavior, connection usage and act on it proactively rather than after an incident.
- Work with the infra/DBA team on backup, recovery and replication strategy you don't have to own the infra, but you should know enough to spot a bad setup.
- Apply sensible access control and constraints so data integrity isn't left to chance.
- Make calls on partitioning, sharding or extensions (pg_partman, pgcrypto, PostGIS, etc.)

when the use case genuinely needs it.
- Keep documentation current ER diagrams, data dictionaries, scripts so the next person isn't reverse-engineering your work.
- Review database-related code from the rest of the team and flag issues before they ship.
- Support application teams with database integration and query optimization as features get built out.
- Translate business requirements into efficient schema and query designs — not just implement what's handed to you.
- Handle data migrations and version upgrades when the time comes, with a explicit rollback plan.

3. Required Skills

- 2-5 years working hands-on with PostgreSQL 15/16/17, with PG17 preferred.
- Excellent understanding of advanced SQL — joins, window functions, CTEs, recursive queries.
- Has written and optimized complex queries against large tables, and knows how to rework one that's running slow.
- Good understanding of how MVCC, WAL and autovacuum actually work, and has had to deal with vacuum/bloat issues firsthand.
- Knows indexing trade-offs (B-Tree, GIN, GiST, BRIN) and can justify why one fits better than another for a given query.
- Has debugged real locking, blocking or deadlock issues in production — not just read about them.

- Comfortable with pg_dump/pg_restore for routine backups, and understands how replication works even if you haven't configured it end-to-end yourself.
- Understands database security best practices — least-privilege access, role separation, and protecting sensitive data.
- Reasonable with Git and comfortable working as part of a team rather than in isolation.
- Can take an ER diagram or design doc and turn it into something that actually works.

4. Nice to Have

- Understanding of HA/clustering concepts (Patroni, repmgr, pgpool-II) and connection pooling (PgBouncer) — even if you haven't configured them hands-on, knowing how they work is a plus.
- Worked with managed Postgres on AWS RDS/Aurora, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or Cloud SQL.
- Exposure to Citus, TimescaleDB or similar for analytical/MPP workloads.
- Some grounding in data warehouse concepts — OLAP vs OLTP, dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, fact and dimension tables, slowly changing dimensions.
- Comfortable building materialized views and aggregation logic for reporting/BI use cases.
- Basic exposure to ETL/data pipeline concepts — staging, transformation, and load patterns — even if not hands-on with a specific tool.
- Used pgAdmin, pgBadger, pg_stat_statements or similar to actually diagnose problems, not just monitor dashboards.
- Familiar with row-level security and encryption practices for sensitive data.
- Comfortable working in Linux/Unix environments.

5. Education

- B.Tech/MCA/M.Sc. in Computer Science or a related field — or equivalent experience that speaks for itself.
