Role & responsibilities

To provide comprehensive medical care for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents by ensuring accurate diagnosis, timely treatment, preventive healthcare, emergency management, and family-centered care while maintaining high standards of patient safety and quality.

Roles and Responsibilities

1. Outpatient (OPD) Services

- Examine and evaluate newborns, infants, children, and adolescents.
- Diagnose and treat acute and chronic childhood illnesses.
- Monitor growth and developmental milestones.
- Provide nutritional assessment and counselling.
- Administer vaccinations as per the National Immunization Schedule.
- Educate parents regarding child health, hygiene, nutrition, and preventive care.
- Maintain complete OPD documentation and electronic medical records.

2. Inpatient (IP) Services

- Admit patients requiring inpatient treatment.
- Conduct daily ward rounds and monitor patient progress.
- Review investigations and modify treatment plans.
- Coordinate with nursing staff regarding patient care.
- Ensure timely discharge planning and counselling.

3. Newborn Care

- Perform complete newborn examination immediately after birth.
- Attend all normal and high-risk deliveries.
- Assess APGAR score and provide neonatal resuscitation when required.
- Manage neonatal jaundice, sepsis, respiratory distress, hypoglycaemia, and feeding difficulties.
- Encourage and support exclusive breastfeeding.
- Counsel parents regarding newborn care before discharge.

4. Delivery Room Responsibilities

- Attend deliveries as per hospital protocol.
- Receive newborn safely after delivery.
- Perform immediate neonatal assessment.
- Initiate neonatal resuscitation when indicated.
- Stabilize critically ill newborns before referral if required.

5. NICU Responsibilities (If Available)

- Manage premature and sick newborns.




- Interpret neonatal investigations.
- Monitor ventilator/CPAP-supported babies.
- Manage neonatal emergencies.
- Coordinate referrals to higher centres whenever necessary.

6. Emergency Responsibilities

- Attend paediatric emergencies promptly.
- Manage seizures, asthma, dehydration, shock, poisoning, trauma, and respiratory emergencies.
- Stabilize critically ill children.
- Participate in Code Blue and emergency response teams.

7. Preventive Healthcare

- Growth monitoring.
- Developmental screening.
- Vaccination services.
- Nutrition counselling.
- Prevention of childhood infections.
- School health advice.

8. Parent Counselling

- Explain diagnosis and treatment plans clearly.
- Counsel regarding medications and follow-up.
- Educate parents on breastfeeding and complementary feeding.
- Provide guidance regarding developmental milestones.
- Counsel parents regarding warning signs requiring urgent medical attention.

9. Documentation

- Maintain accurate medical records.
- Prepare discharge summaries.
- Complete newborn records.
- Maintain vaccination records.
- Record mortality and morbidity data.
- Document informed consent where applicable.

10. Infection Control

- Follow NABH infection control policies.
- Maintain hand hygiene compliance.
- Use appropriate PPE.
- Report hospital-acquired infections.
- Follow biomedical waste management protocols.

11. Quality & Patient Safety





- Participate in quality improvement activities.
- Report clinical incidents and near misses.
- Follow hospital clinical protocols.
- Participate in NABH accreditation activities.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.

12. Multidisciplinary Coordination

- Work closely with:

- Obstetricians
- Neonatologists
- Anaesthetists
- Nursing staff
- Laboratory
- Radiology
- Pharmacy
- Dietitian
- Physiotherapist (when required)

13. Academic Responsibilities

- Conduct CMEs and departmental meetings.
- Train nursing staff on neonatal and paediatric care.
- Participate in clinical audits.
- Stay updated with current paediatric guidelines and evidence-based practices.

14. Administrative Responsibilities

- Ensure availability during assigned duty hours.
- Attend departmental meetings.
- Assist in preparing departmental reports.
- Participate in policy implementation.
- Maintain qualified behaviour and ethics.

15. Legal & Ethical Responsibilities

- Adhere to the National Medical Commission (NMC) Code of Ethics.
- Obtain informed consent when required.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Comply with all applicable legal and statutory requirements.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

- OPD patient satisfaction score.
- Timely attendance for deliveries and emergencies.
- Response time for neonatal emergencies.
- Vaccination compliance rate.
- Breastfeeding initiation rate within one hour of birth.
- Accuracy and completeness of medical documentation.
- Discharge summary completion within hospital timelines.
- Compliance with infection control protocols.
- Participation in quality improvement and NABH activities.

Required Qualifications

- MBBS
- MD/DNB Paediatrics (Mandatory)
- Fellowship in Neonatology (Preferred for NICU services)
