Role Overview

The Mainframe Storage Administrator manages and optimizes enterprise storage on IBM z/OS platforms, ensuring availability, performance, and compliance. The role covers provisioning and migration of DASD and tape storage, policy management via DFSMS, and catalog integrity using IDCAMS/ICF Catalogs. The administrator troubleshoots space-related abends, monitors capacity and health using tools like Omegamon, and produces reports from SMF/DCOLLECT/BVIR data. They also drive modernization recommendations, coordinate across multi-LPAR environments with DASD/VTS, and partner with stakeholders while managing a ticket queue and on-call coverage.

Required Qualifications

- 10+ years of hands-on Mainframe Storage Administration experience.
- Solid experience with DASD and tape storage solutions, including configuration and migration (DASDDASD, TapeTape).
- Working knowledge of z/OS (MVS) fundamentals, storage architecture, and storage devices.
- Proficiency with TSO/ISPF, JCL, VSAM, ISMF, JES2, SDSF, and spool management.
- Expertise in datasets and catalogs: PS, PDS, PDSE, GDG, ICF Catalogs; skilled with IDCAMS/IDCAMs utilities.
- Deep experience with DFSMS components: DFSMSdfp, DFSMSdss, DFSMShsm, and DFSMSrmm (or equivalents).
- Experience with tape management and policy tools such as DFSMSrmm and/or CA-1.
- Hands-on with CA storage products (CA Disk, CA Allocate) and FDR family products for backup/migration.
- Experience with storage monitoring tools such as Omegamon XE (or equivalent).
- Proficiency using ICKDSF for device initialization and maintenance.




- Ability to diagnose and resolve space-related abends (SB37/SD37/SE37) and allocation issues.
- Experience generating and analyzing SMF/DCOLLECT/BVIR reports for capacity and performance.
- Production support in environments with multiple LPARs, CECs, large DASD farms, and VTS controllers.
- Experience with storage replication methods and execution.
- Willingness to provide on-call support across US/Europe/APAC hours, including weekends/holidays.
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field (preferred).

Responsibilities

- Provision, configure, and manage DASD and tape storage across multi-LPAR z/OS environments, including VTS.
- Own catalog integrity and dataset lifecycle management using ICF Catalogs, IDCAMS, and DFSMS policies (storage/data/management classes, ACS routines).
- Execute and validate migrations (DASDDASD, TapeTape) and storage replication with minimal downtime.
- Monitor and optimize storage performance and capacity using Omegamon or similar tools; generate SMF/DCOLLECT/BVIR reports.
- Troubleshoot allocation issues and space-related abends; perform device tasks with ICKDSF and coordinate with operations.
- Provide production support, prioritize and resolve tickets, and collaborate with technicians and cross-functional teams.
- Ensure security and compliance of storage services; maintain documentation and change records.
- Recommend modernization options and identify opportunities to improve reliability, cost, and efficiency; build stakeholder relationships.
