Role Summary
At SMBC Global Services Chennai, you will play a key technical individual contributor role in building SMBC’s digital banking engineering capability in India. This position combines hands-on software development, solution design, and technical mentorship, enabling you to contribute directly to the development of scalable, secure, and resilient banking platforms.
You will work closely with the Singapore technology teams and Chennai engineering leadership to design, develop, and operate modern cloud-native banking solutions across web, mobile, and API channels. The role requires balancing immediate project delivery needs with long-term architectural sustainability, ensuring systems are built with flexibility, scalability, and reliability in mind.
In addition to technical delivery, you will play an important role in elevating the engineering standards of the team by mentoring junior engineers, conducting code reviews, participating in pairing sessions, and promoting knowledge sharing across the engineering organization.
As part of SMBC’s growing engineering capability in Chennai, you will contribute to building a high performing engineering team focused on innovation, engineering excellence, and end-to-end ownership of digital banking platforms. Your work will directly influence how clients interact with SMBC’s digital banking services and will require the ability to navigate complex system dependencies across multiple technology domains.
This is a high-impact engineering role where you will help establish robust engineering practices, contribute to platform architecture decisions, and support the expansion of SMBC’s global technology footprint through the Chennai engineering hub.

Key Responsibilities:
Solution Design & Architecture:
•Lead solution design for project deliverables, ensuring timely delivery of comprehensive technical specifications
•Break down complex, ambiguous problems into actionable solutions with explicit knowns, unknowns, and resolution paths
•Design cloud-native architecture that enables multiple future scenarios without overengineering for uncertainty
•Understand and articulate scaling and reliability limits across major business-critical systems •Map data relationships and dependencies across technology domains and their impact on the platform
•Collaborate with architects and senior engineers across Singapore and Chennai teams to ensure alignment with SMBC’s global architecture standards.
Technical Delivery & Excellence:
•Work directly with project delivery teams to translate requirements into high-quality technical implementations
•Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code across the full stack as needed
•Conduct proof-of-concepts to evaluate new technologies and approaches when needed
•Ensure comprehensive observability:

•Follow established SOLID design principles and clean architecture patterns to build modular, extensible systems.
•Leverage modern development tools, including Generative AI and other tools, responsibly to enhance developer productivity while maintaining strong engineering discipline and code quality.
Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing:
•Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, providing constructive feedback that builds their skills
•Pair with engineers to elevate software development practices and accelerate knowledge transfer •Contribute to building a strong engineering culture within the Chennai team focused on ownership, learning, and technical excellence.
•Support the development of internal engineering standards, documentation practices, and coding guidelines as the team grows by being the go-to technical/senior engineer for new/less experienced team members.
•Foster a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence within the team and also conduct technical training sessions and workshops on best practices and new technologies
Collaboration & Communication:
•Coordinate across technology domains to ensure alignment and integration
•Create clear, effective technical documentation for diverse audiences
•Facilitate honest technical debates that strengthen decision-making and team dynamics
•Evangelise recent ideas, tools, and processes through compelling presentations
•Collaborate with DevOps teams on infrastructure and deployment strategies
Continuous Improvement:
•Stay current with emerging software technologies and share knowledge with the team
•Proactively seek feedback on architecture decisions to refine approaches
•Bring new ideas and present them in clear, well-reasoned ways
•Identify technical debt and advocate for its resolution
Modern Engineering Practices:
•Promote a culture of quality-first development through left shift approach, automated testing, TDD, and continuous integration.
•Encourage adoption of modern engineering practices including AI-assisted development workflows where appropriate.
•Continuously refine engineering practices to improve productivity, reliability, and developer experience.
Required Qualifications:
Technical Expertise:
Must demonstrate high proficiency in at least 5 of the following areas:
•Full Stack Development: 6-10 years of hands-on experience with modern web technologies like React/Next.js, Node.js for front-end and/or Java/Spring Boot or similar for back-end technologies •Cloud Architecture: Solid experience designing and implementing solutions on Azure (preferred) or AWS/GCP, including micro-services and cloud-native patterns
•Mobile Development:



Experience with React Native, Flutter, or native iOS/Android development •Testing & Quality: Strong experience with test automation frameworks and strategies across the testing pyramid (unit, integration, end-to-end)
•DevOps Practices: Good understanding of CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and observability
•Database & Data Systems: Experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases, caching strategies, and event streaming
•API Design: Strong skills in RESTful API design, GraphQL, and API gateway patterns

Preferred Qualifications:
•Previous experience in banking, financial services, or highly regulated industries
•Exposure to wealth management, private banking or institutional/corporate business domains
•Experience working in distributed teams across multiple time zones
•Track record of successfully evangelizing technical changes in large organizations
•Experience mentoring or training junior engineers in previous roles
•Active participation in tech communities through speaking, writing, or open-source contributions
