About the Role
We are seeking an experienced PCB Layout Engineer to design and deliver high-reliability, high-speed multilayer PCBs for products spanning regulated medical devices, industrial instrumentation, and radiation detection systems. This role requires strong hands-on layout expertise combined with a solid grasp of signal integrity, EMI/EMC compliance, and regulatory design standards relevant to safety-critical electronics.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and layout complex PCBs (up to 10+ layers) for mixed-signal, high-speed digital, and sensitive analog systems.
- Perform high-speed layout techniques: controlled impedance routing, differential pair routing (length/skew matching), via stitching, and return-path management.
- Perform impedance calculations and stack-up design (single-ended and differential) in coordination with PCB fabricators.
- Design layouts for high-pin-count BGAs, FPGAs, DDR memory interfaces, and mixed analog/digital boundaries.
- Apply EMI/EMC-aware layout practices grounding strategy, shielding, guard traces, decoupling, and filtering — to meet pre-compliance and certification targets.
- Collaborate with schematic/hardware design engineers to translate design intent into manufacturable, testable layouts.
- Generate and review fabrication outputs (Gerbers, drill files, IPC-2581/ODB++, stack-up drawings, assembly drawings).
- Support DFM/DFA reviews with contract manufacturers and fabrication houses.
- Support signal integrity simulation/review (return loss, crosstalk, insertion loss) where required for high-speed interfaces.
- Maintain layout documentation in compliance with configuration control and regulatory design history file (DHF) requirements where applicable.
Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on PCB layout experience in OrCAD PCB Designer / OrCAD Plus (mandatory).
- Proven experience with high-speed digital layouts (DDR, LVDS, USB3/PCIe-class interfaces, clock distribution).
- Solid practical knowledge of differential pair routing and impedance calculation/control (microstrip/stripline, single-ended and differential).
- Experience laying out multilayer boards up to 10 layers, including stack-up definition and via structures (blind/buried/microvias a plus).
- Solid understanding of EMI/EMC design principles at the layout level (grounding, shielding, filtering, partitioning).
- Working knowledge of relevant industry standards, including:
- IPC-2221 / IPC-2222 — Generic and rigid PCB design standards
- IPC-6012 — Qualification and performance for rigid PCBs
- IEC 61000 series (e.g., 61000-4-2/-3/-4/-6) — EMC immunity/emissions testing references
- CISPR 32 / CISPR 35 — EMI emissions and immunity for multimedia/industrial equipment
- IEC 60601-1 / -1-2 — Medical electrical equipment safety and EMC (for medical-device layouts)
- IEC 61010-1 — Safety requirements for industrial/lab measurement equipment
- FCC Part 15 — U.S. EMI emissions compliance (if exporting to US markets)
- Familiarity with ISO 13485 design-control documentation practices (medical device QMS) is a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, datasheets, and fabricator DFM feedback independently.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Experience with RF or analog front-end layouts (e.g., PMT/photodiode signal chains, low-noise analog).
- Exposure to signal integrity tools (HyperLynx, Polar Si9000, or equivalent) for impedance/SI verification.
- Experience laying out boards intended for regulatory certification (medical CE/FDA, or industrial CE/UL) — i.e., having supported EMC pre-compliance testing cycles.
- Experience with RF shielding/enclosure co-design for EMI mitigation.
- Familiarity with thermal considerations in high-density layouts.
