Senior Tooling Engineer Wind Energy

Position Title: Senior Engineer – Tooling & Fixtures (Design to Handover)

Department: Manufacturing Engineering / Tooling / Operations

Industry: Wind Energy (WTG Components, Blade, Nacelle & Assembly)

Reports To: Lead / Manager – Tooling Engineering

Location: [Insert Location]

Position Summary

The Senior Tooling Engineer leads the end-to-end engineering of specialized tooling, heavy-duty assembly fixtures, and lifting equipment used across wind turbine manufacturing and installation (Nacelle, Hub, Blade, or Tower lines).

This role spans the entire life cycle—from scoping new wind-line tooling requirements and CFT design reviews to managing vendor TBERs, executing rigorous FAT/SAT validations, enforcing site safety, and delivering formal handovers to production teams.

Key Responsibilities & Scope

1. Requirement Scoping & Technical Alignment

- Wind-Specific Tooling Identification: Identify needs for heavy-duty assembly fixtures, mold tooling, pitch/yaw positioning rigs, transport/lifting gear, and turn-over stands.
- CFT Collaboration: Lead technical discussions with Cross-Functional Teams (Design, EHS, Quality, and Production) to define load capacities, ergonomic limits, and cycle-time requirements.
- TBER Preparation: Draft and evaluate Technical Bid Evaluation Requests (TBER) to compare vendor proposals against wind industry design and safety codes.

2. Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) & Quality Clearance

- FAT Documentation: Prepare FAT protocols specifying mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and structural load-test requirements.
- Evaluation & Sign-off: Lead vendor FAT reviews, inspecting welding quality, structural integrity, automation sequences, and safety interlocks prior to dispatch.
- Punch-List Closure & MDCC: Track FAT punch-list closure and issue the Material Dispatch Clearance Certificate (MDCC).

3. Site Coordination, Safety & SAT

- Vendor Safety Audits:

Conduct strict vendor safety reviews in line with wind-industry EHS regulations before installation begins.
- Installation Logistics: Coordinate resource and material planning for heavy rigging, crane positioning, and fixture installation on the shop floor or assembly site.
- Site Acceptance Testing (SAT): Prepare and execute SAT protocols on live production lines; track and close out validation findings.

4. Handover & Capability Building

- Production Handover: Formally hand over commissioned, validated tooling and fixtures to the shop-floor management team.
- Technical & Usage Training: Conduct technical maintenance training for engineering teams and operational safety/usage training for production technicians operating high-capacity rigs.

5. Operational Monitoring & Engineering Modifications

- Performance Tracking: Monitor the operational stability, precision, and safety of all active wind tooling, molds, and assembly fixtures.
- Modifications & ECNs: Evaluate, propose, and close out tooling modifications to improve safety, eliminate bottlenecks, or adapt to turbine design changes (Engineering Change Notices).

Required Qualifications & Experience

- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical, Production, or Structural Engineering (or Diploma in Tool Design with relevant wind industry experience).
- Experience: 5–8+ years of hands-on experience in tooling/fixture engineering within the wind energy sector (Nacelle/Hub assembly, Blade manufacturing, or Tower fabrication) or heavy-equipment manufacturing.
- Technical Expertise:

- Solid knowledge of heavy-fabrication tooling, hydraulic lifting systems, turning/tilting fixtures, and load-bearing structures.
- Familiarity with international wind design/safety standards (e.g., ISO, CE, ASME, machinery directives).
- Hands-on experience preparing TBER, FAT/SAT test protocols, and MDCC documentation.

- Key Attributes: Excellent vendor management, cross-functional coordination, strong focus on safety compliance, and structured problem-solving skills.
