Job Summary:
The role of a Data Centre MEP (Electrical) Engineer is to manage the critical infrastructure, operations, and maintenance of a highly available, Tier-IV fault-tolerant enterprise-class data centre. The Electrical O&M; Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and reliability of electrical infrastructure in a data centre. This includes high and low voltage systems, transformers, substations, electrical panels, UPS systems, battery banks, DG sets, busbar trunking (BBT), and earthing systems. The role ensures uninterrupted power supply, safety compliance, and efficient energy management across the facility.
Roles and Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of the position will be to exercise supervisory control over the O&M; vendor / OEM’s and will be responsible for the followings:
- Reporting of every incident and escalation of unresolved incidents as per defined escalation matrix till resolution.
- Ensure all the critical parameters are monitored with appropriate thresholds for Datacentre Facility setup.
- Good Understanding about UPS redundancy and distribution of power from source to destination.
- Hands on for power connectors and cable used for the single phase/3 phase devices inside Datacentre.
- Knowledge on maintaining 33KV / 11KV Main power supply, AIS/GIS, ACB, earth pit, Transformer, LT/HT panel, Electrical distribution panel, UPS, ATS and HT/LT DG set.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of electrical systems including HT/LT panels, transformers, substations, and switchgear.
- Monitor and maintain UPS systems, battery banks, and DG sets to ensure backup power availability.
- Inspect and maintain BBT systems and earthing networks for safety and performance.
- Conduct routine inspections, testing, and diagnostics of electrical equipment.
- Vendor Co-ordination for breakdown calls and Preventive Maintenance.
- Prepare and Submit MIS reports like power, UPS utilization etc.
System Monitoring & Optimization:
- Use Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) and Building Management Systems (BMS) for real-time monitoring and fault detection.
- Analyse power quality, load distribution, and energy consumption to optimize performance.
- Ensure redundancy and failover mechanisms are operational for critical systems.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, incidents, and system performance.
- Prepare reports on energy usage, equipment health, and operational KPIs.
- Update SOPs, EOPs, and MOPs for electrical systems.
Compliance & Coordination:
- Ensure compliance with electrical safety standards (e.g., IEC, IEEE, NFPA).
- Coordinate with OEMs, vendors, and contractors for repairs, upgrades, and AMC services.
- Support internal and external audits related to electrical infrastructure.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems: HT/LT panels, transformers, substations, UPS, DG sets, battery banks, BBT, and earthing.
- Basic understanding of HVAC cooling system, PAHU, AHU and Chiller system.
- Basic Knowledge about VESDA,CCTV,WLDS Fire Detection and Suppression systems
- Experience with EPMS, BMS, and SCADA systems.
- Familiarity with electrical safety codes and energy efficiency practices.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
- 6+ years of experience in electrical O&M;, preferably in data centres or critical infrastructure.
- Certifications in electrical safety, energy management, or power systems are a plus.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Solid analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and under pressure in a 24x7 operational environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
