The Role

We're looking for a passionate Backend & AI Developer to design and implement our AI chat feature with agentic capabilities. You'll be the first backend/AI hire and will work directly with the founding team to build an intelligent, context-aware conversational financial assistant.

This isn't just a coding jobyou'll be a key decision-maker in product features, architecture, technical direction, and AI implementation strategy.

What You'll Do

Product Development:

- Build AI chat APIs with function calling capabilities for agentic workflows
- Develop and maintain RESTful APIs using Python and FastAPI framework
- Design and implement backend endpoints for transaction processing, budget management, and user data operations
- Integrate LLMs (OpenAI GPT-4/Google Gemini) with backend services
- Design context-aware AI systems that personalize responses based on user financial data
- Implement streaming responses and multi-turn conversation handling
- Build FastAPI middleware for authentication, logging, and error handling
- Own the complete backend development lifecycle from architecture to deployment

Technical Leadership:

- Make critical decisions on AI model selection, prompt engineering, and optimization
- Design scalable FastAPI application architecture with proper routing and dependency injection
- Implement robust, scalable, and maintainable code following industry best practices
- Design Firestore data models and build repository patterns for data access
- Create comprehensive API documentation using OpenAPI/Swagger
- Implement API versioning and backward compatibility strategies




- Set up CI/CD pipelines and manage cloud deployments (when ready)
- Optimize AI performance, token usage, and cost management
- Build RESTful endpoints following industry standards and best practices

Collaboration & Growth:

- Work closely with the product and frontend teams to deliver seamless user experiences
- Build callable AI agent functions
- Design and document API contracts for frontend integration
- Implement WebSocket connections for real-time chat functionality
- Participate in product discussions and contribute ideas beyond just implementation

Must-Have Requirements

Experience:

- 3+ years of Python development experience
- Strong hands-on experience with FastAPI or similar frameworks (Flask, Django)
- Proven experience with OpenAI API or Google Gemini (LLM integration)
- Experience with LLM function calling and tool use
- Strong prompt engineering skills
- Proven track record of building and deploying backend applications to production

Technical Skills:

Python & Backend:

- FastAPI - Must have production experience
- Async/await patterns - Proficiency in asynchronous programming (must be proficient)
- Pydantic - Data validation and serialization
- RESTful API Integration - Experience designing and consuming backend APIs

AI/ML Integration:

- LLM Integration - Hands-on experience with OpenAI or Google Gemini APIs
- Function Calling - Building AI agents with tool use capabilities
- Prompt Engineering - Context building and optimization




- Token Management - Understanding of cost optimization and context window management

Cloud & Infrastructure:

- Google Cloud Platform - Cloud Run, Firestore, Secret Manager
- Firebase - Authentication and Firestore database
- Docker - Containerization and deployment
- Serverless Architecture - Understanding of cloud-native applications

General:

- Git/Version Control - Professional experience with Git workflows
- NoSQL Databases - Experience with Firestore, MongoDB, or DynamoDB
- Security Best Practices - API authentication, encryption, secure storage
- Structured Logging - Application monitoring and debugging

Positive to Have

AI/ML:

- Experience with LangChain or LlamaIndex for AI orchestration
- Knowledge of RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) patterns
- Experience with AI agent frameworks (AutoGPT, LangGraph, CrewAI)
- Familiarity with vector databases (Pinecone, Weaviate, Chroma)
- Experience with fine-tuning LLMs or working with embeddings

Backend:

- Experience with Gmail API and OAuth 2.0
- Knowledge of encryption (AES-256, RSA)
- Experience with batch processing and background jobs
- Familiarity with pytest and test-driven development
- Experience with API rate limiting and throttling

Cloud & Infrastructure:

- Experience with Google Cloud Functions or Cloud Tasks
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Cloud Build)
- Experience with monitoring tools (Cloud Logging, Sentry)
- Understanding of cost optimization in cloud environments

Domain Knowledge:

- Experience in fintech or financial applications
- Understanding of personal finance concepts
- Experience building data-driven applications
- Published technical blog posts or articles on AI/backend topics

Portfolio:

- Open-source contributions to AI or backend projects
- Portfolio of AI/LLM integration projects
- Demonstrable experience building production-grade AI applications
