About Client
They are building next-generation biotechnology platforms powered by synthetic biology, precision fermentation, metabolic engineering, and advanced bioprocessing. We are developing scalable, sustainable, and commercially viable bio-based products for global markets.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic Principal Application Scientist to lead the development, optimization, and deployment of application workflows across strain development, fermentation, downstream processing, and final product characterization. This role will serve as the scientific and technical authority for application development, ensuring that analytical and process solutions are robust, scalable, regulatory-compliant, and aligned with commercialization goals.
The ideal candidate will combine deep expertise in protein biochemistry, analytical characterization, and bioprocess development with strong leadership, stakeholder management, and technology transfer capabilities. In addition to executing analytical workflows, the Principal Application Scientist will shape the organizations application strategy, mentor scientific teams, and represent the company in external collaborations, regulatory discussions, and customer engagements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement end-to-end application workflows supporting upstream and downstream process development.
- Develop, optimize, validate, and troubleshoot analytical methods for protein quantification, purity assessment, and structural characterization.
- Lead analytical characterization using HPLC/UPLC, LC-MS, GC, SDS-PAGE, Western blot, UV-Vis, ELISA, and related platforms.
- Establish assays for monitoring fermentation kinetics, metabolite profiling, impurity analysis, and process performance.
- Define, monitor, and control Critical Quality Attributes (CQAs) for food-grade recombinant proteins and bio-based products.
- Ensure analytical method robustness, reproducibility, and documentation aligned with industrial standards, GLP, ISO, HACCP, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate closely with strain engineering, fermentation, DSP, manufacturing, quality, and regulatory teams to integrate analytical and application solutions across the product lifecycle.
- Support technology transfer and scale-up by ensuring analytical comparability across lab, pilot, and commercial manufacturing scales.
- Lead root-cause investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) for analytical or process-related deviations.
- Build, mentor, and develop the application and analytical team, including training, SOP development, performance management, and quality oversight.
- Drive data analysis, statistical interpretation, and scientific reporting for internal reviews, investors, grant submissions, and regulatory dossiers.
- Represent the company in external scientific collaborations, customer meetings, technical conferences, audits, and regulatory interactions.
- Identify emerging technologies, analytical platforms, and industry trends to continuously enhance the organizations application development capabilities.
- Contribute to intellectual property generation, patent strategy, and publication of scientific findings where appropriate.
Technical Competencies
- Strong expertise in protein biochemistry, recombinant protein production, and analytical characterization.
- Hands-on experience with chromatographic techniques including IEX, RP, SEC, HIC, and affinity chromatography.
- Advanced experience with mass spectrometry-based protein identification, quantification, and structural analysis.
- Familiarity with impurity profiling, host cell protein analysis, endotoxin testing, glycosylation analysis, and product comparability studies.
- Experience establishing and scaling analytical or application laboratories, including equipment selection, qualification, vendor management, and budget planning.
- Strong understanding of food safety, regulatory requirements, and quality systems including HACCP, ISO, GLP, GMP, and international regulatory frameworks.
- Proficiency in statistical data analysis, Design of Experiments (DoE), multivariate analysis, and scientific reporting.
- Knowledge of process analytical technology (PAT), digital data management systems, and automation in analytical workflows.
- Experience with risk assessment methodologies, quality-by-design (QbD), and lifecycle management of analytical methods.
- Ability to translate complex scientific findings into actionable business and commercialization strategies.
Mandatory Qualifications for a Principal Application Scientist
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, or a related field; Masters degree with significant industry experience may be considered.
- 10+ years of relevant experience in biotechnology, precision fermentation, biopharmaceuticals, or food biotechnology, with a strong focus on analytical and application development.
- Proven track record of leading end-to-end application or analytical programs from early R&D; through scale-up and commercialization.
- Demonstrated expertise in method development, validation, transfer, and regulatory-compliant documentation.
- Experience managing cross-functional scientific teams and mentoring junior scientists.
- Solid project management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple programs and deliver against aggressive timelines.
- Experience interacting with external partners, customers, auditors, and regulatory agencies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to scientific, business, and investor audiences.
- Strategic mindset with the ability to align scientific innovation with commercial and operational objectives.
Preferred Qualifications
