The Direct Tax Manager will be responsible for ensuring that the Company's direct tax operations comply with the provisions of the Income-tax Act, 1961 and 2025, applicable rules, circulars and notifications, as well as with the Group's internal tax policies and standards. The role operates within the framework of objectives set by Group Finance and the Central Tax Team, and requires close coordination with business units, statutory auditors, tax advisors and external counsel on direct tax matters.
Role & responsibilities
A. Tax Compliance & Reporting
- Prepare and coordinate direct tax compliances, including tax computations, tax return filings and tax audit reports (Form 3CD and related annexures).
- Prepare the advance tax workings on a quarterly basis and ensure timely payment.
- Maintain and periodically update tax position charts and contingent liability schedules.
- Prepare applications for lower/nil withholding tax certificates under the Income-tax Act.
- Handle direct tax compliance matters relating to overseas group companies and cross-border transactions.
B. Assessments & Litigation
- Prepare and review submissions for scrutiny assessments and reassessment proceedings.
- Draft responses and submissions for filing before tax authorities and ensure timely replies to notices.
- Collate and review facts, documents and legal grounds for appeals at various appellate stages.
- Draft appeals and written submissions before the CIT(A), ITAT, High Court and Supreme Court, in coordination with external counsel.
C. International Taxation
- Advise on the applicability of withholding tax (TDS) on domestic and international/cross-border transactions.
- Prepare and coordinate Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) applications and related documentation.
- Apply working knowledge of Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAAs) and basic Transfer Pricing provisions and rules to cross-border tax matters.
D. Advisory & Business Support
- Review draft commercial agreements and advise on tax-efficient and legally sustainable structuring.
- Provide practical direct tax advisory support to business teams on ongoing transactions and recent initiatives.
E. Stakeholder Management
- Interface with other internal departments and group companies on tax matters.
- Interact with statutory auditors and external tax advisors to resolve queries relating to tax positions and disclosures.
- Keep internal teams updated on recent changes in direct tax law and relevant judicial pronouncements and stay current on developments through continuous self-learning.
Preferred candidate profile
- Strong working knowledge of the Income-tax Act, 1961 and 2025 along with related rules, with sound exposure to direct tax compliance.
- In-depth experience in handling annual tax assessments and related proceedings.
- Technically strong, with solid knowledge and hands-on experience in India corporate tax compliance.
- Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability, with a meticulous approach to work.
- Good business acumen, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and requirements.
- Proactive, resourceful and hands-on, with the ability to take initiative.
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision, and to deliver under time pressure and complexity.
Qualification & Experience
- Chartered Accountant (CA), with 5-6 years of post-qualification experience in direct tax.
- Prior experience with a Big 4 firm or a large MNC, preferably in the FMCG sector or a comparable industry, will be preferred.
