Job Title: Senior Consultant & Head of Department Critical Care

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Senior Consultant & Head of Department (HOD) Critical Care to lead the Critical Care Department while delivering exceptional patient care. The incumbent will be responsible for managing critically ill patients, providing clinical leadership, overseeing departmental operations, mentoring medical teams, and ensuring adherence to evidence-based clinical practices and quality standards.
Role & responsibilities:
Clinical Responsibilities
- Lead the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of critically ill patients requiring intensive care.
- Provide expert clinical care for patients with medical, surgical, trauma, cardiac, neurological, and other life-threatening conditions.
- Perform and supervise critical care procedures, including airway management, mechanical ventilation, central venous catheterization, arterial line insertion, and other ICU interventions.
- Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Participate in emergency response, code blue, rapid response, and critical care consultations.
- Ensure timely clinical decision-making and effective utilization of ICU resources.
Department Leadership
- Lead and manage the overall functioning of the Critical Care Department.
- Develop and implement clinical protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and evidence-based practices.
- Supervise and mentor consultants, residents, junior doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Conduct departmental meetings,
clinical audits, mortality and morbidity reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and statutory regulations.
Quality & Patient Safety
- Promote patient safety initiatives and infection prevention protocols.
- Monitor ICU quality indicators, patient outcomes, and departmental performance metrics.
- Ensure accurate clinical documentation and timely completion of medical records.
- Participate in quality accreditation programs, clinical governance, and risk management activities.
Academic & Research
- Conduct clinical teaching sessions, case discussions, and continuing medical education (CME) programs.
- Mentor postgraduate students, residents, and fellows.
- Encourage research activities, publications, and participation in national and international conferences.
- Stay updated with advances in critical care medicine and implement best practices.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist in manpower planning, staffing, and departmental resource management.
- Coordinate with other clinical departments to ensure seamless patient care.
- Participate in budgeting, equipment planning, and procurement of ICU resources.
- Support hospital leadership in strategic initiatives related to critical care services.
Preferred candidate profile:
- MD/DNB or DM/DrNB/Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine or an equivalent recognized super-specialty qualification.
- Valid Delhi Medical Council registration is mandatory.
- Minimum 12 year of post-specialization experience in Critical Care. Additional leadership experience is preferred for the HOD role.
- Expertise in intensive care medicine and management of critically ill patients.
- Strong leadership and departmental management capabilities.
- Excellent clinical decision-making and crisis management skills.
- Proficiency in advanced life support protocols and critical care procedures.
- Strong communication and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.
- Commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice.
- Ability to mentor, train, and develop clinical teams.
- Excellent documentation, analytical, and organizational skills.
Preferred Attributes:
- Experience in leading an ICU or Critical Care Department.
- Exposure to NABH/JCI accreditation standards and quality initiatives.
- Strong academic background with publications, research, or teaching experience.
- Ability to drive innovation and continuous improvement in critical care services.
