Role & responsibilities
To ensure smooth functioning of the designated area and equipment as per the laid down protocols to provide quality and safe patient care with optimum utilization of resources.
A. General Responsibilities
- Accountable for complete patient care and safety in the assigned area/ ward
- Makes a complete & quick assessment of patients on admission / at the beginning of the shifts and documents the same for designated age group
- Endorses patients and assigned tasks to the next shift completely and correctly
- Providing Nursing care as per protocols: including periodic vital recording, administration of IV fluids and medications, and blood transfusions, recording of ECG, maintaining personal hygiene, preparing for /getting done the investigations, etc.
- Demonstrates awareness of potential /actual risks of infection and modes of transmission and follows infection control protocols
- Able to perform care for control & prevention of infection e.g. Isolation care, Care bundles etc
- Maintains continuity of care through clear and concise (verbal and written) communication.
- Maintains required quantity and storage of medicines, CSSD and medical consumables
- Reports patient condition to appropriate personnel as required without delay.
- Implements emergency life resuscitative measures according to RRT & BLS protocols.
- Undertakes patient and family education and documents the same.
- Uses equipment safely and efficiently and takes responsibility of the inventory of the unit.
- Facilitates smooth discharge as per the protocols and doctors advice.
- Handles the hospital system for indent, medication and patient information.
B. Unit Specific Responsibility
- Prepares monthly unit duty roaster and yearly leave plan as per departmental guidelines and adjust duty roaster as per needs of unit.
- Checks the coming days duty roaster for availability of staff for all shifts. Similar staffing check will be done for week-ends & emergency leaves
- Be present at the time of endorsement in the morning and noon and supervise the same for complete ward overlook.
- Gives orientation of the unit and assists the new staff in getting her orientation checklist completed on time.
- Ensures her staff attends all In-Service education classes and gets certified on mandatory certification programs.
- Keep records of her staff including daily attendance, counselling, and in-service education record.
- Ensure that the ward stock kept replenished and accounted for at all times
- Unit In-charge takes round of her unit to ensure safe and best care to all patients, keeping a special watch for problem areas and takes necessary steps to tackle them.
- During rounds she/he will converse with patients and family to ascertain any issues related to services of any kind and inform/liaise with other departments to resolve them.
- Maintains inventory, informs promptly to the relevant department for any defective equipment, safety & health hazards.
- Keeps confidential records of all staff. Documents any reportable incident for reference for annual / probation evaluations.
- Teaches and demonstrates nursing skills at the bed side and assess staff competency.
- Reports any untoward incident of her unit in writing participates in RCA and formulates CAPA.
- Identifies potential problem areas and takes steps to prevent flaming up of the problem, including identification & Case of vulnerable patients.
- Makes rounds with consultants and ensures that the orders are carried out.
- Organizes monthly conference with the staff with minimum 50% attendance so as to keep them informed.
- Ensures an workplace free from noise, bad odors, and other hazards.
- Ensures infection control practices in her unit including safe disposal of waste as per protocols.
- Provides safety to the patient and staff from mechanical, chemical, thermal or bacteriological injuries.
- Assists in staff development.
- Helps administration in the assessment of nurses for promotions & corrective actions.
C. Education and Training
- Attend all Mandatory training and ensure to updates herself/himself in a timely fashion
- Successfully Complete key learning outcomes from the foundation programme during the first month of employment and will complete the main set of competencies within 6 months
- Initiate own development within agreed parameters.
- Help induct new staff with a formal induction programme.
- Be prepared to extend knowledge and skills by rotation to other areas in consultation with the Head of Nursing
- Be prepared to be trained and use any information technology that is brought into your area.
D. Behavioural Responsibility

- Participates actively in the unit-based and organizational quality improvement programs.
- Provides a safe environment for patients, staff, family and visitors.
- Upholds the nursing code of ethics and acts as a role model to other staff Members.
- Handle complaints in accordance with Hospital policy. To report all complaints, incidents or accidents to the nurse in charge of the ward or Chief of Nursing
- Liaise and co-operate with medical staff and other members of the Multidisciplinary teams.
- Completes any other assignments given by Management as deemed fit for the role and expertise
