POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Resident in the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology (FMT) at SMIMS & Central Referral Hospital, Gangtok, Sikkim, is a pivotal training and operational role for postgraduate-qualified doctors seeking structured hands-on experience in forensic medical practice within a university teaching hospital. The incumbent will contribute to undergraduate MBBS teaching, forensic laboratory operations, mortuary supervision, and medico-legal documentation under the guidance of senior faculty. This role serves as a critical stepping stone toward an academic career as Assistant Professor, fulfilling the NMC-mandated Senior Resident experience requirement in a recognized medical institution.
CRITICAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
A. Academic & Teaching Responsibilities
Deliver undergraduate (MBBS) theory lectures and tutorial classes in Forensic Medicine & Toxicology as assigned by the Head of Department.
Conduct undergraduate clinical classes, practical demonstrations, and case-based learning sessions for MBBS students and interns.
Assist senior faculty in postgraduate teaching activities including seminars, journal clubs, and case presentations.
Cover duties of other Senior Residents when required to ensure uninterrupted academic programme delivery.
B. Clinical & Forensic Responsibilities
Collect, record,
and maintain accurate patient and case information in accordance with institutional and medico-legal documentation standards.
Assist in forensic laboratory activities including collection of forensic samples such as viscera, blood, and tissues for toxicological analysis.
Ensure proper preservation and timely dispatch of forensic samples for toxicology analysis, adhering to institutional and legal protocols.
Maintain strict chain of custody for all forensic evidence ensuring proper labelling, packaging, documentation, and secure transfer at every stage.
Supervise mortuary operations and enforce safety protocols including infection control, documentation standards, and dignified handling procedures.
Assist in medico-legal autopsy procedures under the supervision of faculty, including documentation of findings.
Support preparation of medico-legal certificates, injury reports, and other forensic documentation as required.
Cover duties of other Senior Residents when required, ensuring continuity of clinical and forensic operations.
C. Administrative & Other Responsibilities
Maintain meticulous records of all forensic cases, samples, and medico-legal proceedings handled by the department.
Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and NABH compliance activities.
Engage in Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes, workshops, and departmental academic activities.
Complete the NMC-mandated Basic Course in Biomedical Research within the stipulated timeframe.
Undertake any additional responsibilities assigned by the Head of Department or senior faculty.
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS & ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Educational Qualifications
MBBS from a recognized medical institution.
Postgraduate degree: MD / MS / DNB in Forensic Medicine & Toxicology (or equivalent recognized qualification) from a permitted/recognized medical college or institution, as per NMC guidelines.
Regulatory & Compliance Requirements
Valid registration with the State Medical Council or National Medical Commission is mandatory.
Appointment must comply with current NMC guidelines for Senior Resident positions in recognized medical institutions.
Must complete or be willing to complete the Basic Course in Biomedical Research (NMC-mandated) during the tenure.
Preference for candidates seeking to fulfill NMC-recognized SR experience for future Assistant Professor eligibility.
