Overview of the role

Seeking a Senior Java Engineer to join the development team and work on the flagship point-of-sale product, in production since 2006. This product has a thin client (Java) UI with backend logic in both Java and some components still in Dataflex (a legacy development language from the prior-generation product). The database is in SQL and the Java server connects through JDBC.

Future products will include both front-end and back-end work, with a focus on third-party integrations. The team is also in the process of bridging the flagship Java point-of-sale with a current browser-based app, so applicants should have a foundational understanding of JavaScript, as bridge connections will need to be made between the two products.

This team member will work closely with both US and Indian engineers, the Product Manager, and QA to support existing products.

Hours

Working hours are IST, as the majority of the team is India-based, but you must be available from 8:00 to 10:00 AM ET for collaboration with US team members.

Independent contractor engagement, full-time availability. Paid weekly. Responsibilities:

The classic platform — feature development, performance,



and stability of the Java POS backend (Java thin client, SQL Server via JDBC, Windows servers). Integrations — POS is an integration business. You’ll build and extend connections to supplier/distributor partners, payment systems, and third-party services: a continuous, high-value stream of API work.

The bridge — we’re modernizing with a strangler-fig approach: a new Vue.js browser front end is overlaid on the same production database, so users move to recent screens gradually with no big-bang migration. You’ll build the connection points between the Java platform and the recent browser product, which is why working JavaScript knowledge matters. Technical-debt reduction — not a rewrite, but a disciplined, measured retirement of legacy components as the new architecture absorbs them.

Requirements:

8+ years coding experience in Java

Foundational experience with SQL

Functional understanding of JavaScript

Ability to communicate well by video and email in English

Strong understanding of Git DevOps workflows

Experience working on APIs / integrations
