What you need to be successful
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Global Classification Specialist to join our Global Trade Compliance team within the chemical industry. This role is responsible for ensuring the accurate classification of chemical products under the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), the determination of Country of Origin, and the assignment of Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCNs) in accordance with international trade and export control regulations. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of chemical compositions, formulations, and manufacturing processes, as well as how these attributes influence tariff classification, origin determination,
and export control obligations.
Key Responsibilities
• Analyze chemical compositions, technical data sheets (TDS), safety data sheets (SDS), and manufacturing process information to determine accurate Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) codes in compliance with global customs regulations.
• Determine Country of Origin for chemical products and intermediates based on rules of origin, production processes, and sourcing structures.
• Research, assign, and validate Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCNs) under U.S. (EAR), EU Dual-Use, and other applicable export control frameworks relevant to chemical substances.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date classification, origin, and regulatory data within SAP GTS.
• Collaborate with R&D;, regulatory affairs, supply chain, procurement, and product stewardship to obtain and verify product information for classification and compliance assessments.
• Monitor updates to global customs, export control, and chemical regulations, ensuring internal compliance systems reflect current requirements.
• Support internal audits, trade compliance reviews, and data quality initiatives to ensure data integrity and regulatory adherence.
• Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of classification and regulatory compliance processes, tools, and documentation.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Chemical Engineering, International Trade, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
• 3–7 years of experience in customs classification, export control, or trade compliance within the chemical or related manufacturing industry.
• Strong working knowledge of: Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and chemical nomenclature principles.
• Country of Origin determination methodologies.
• Export Control Classification Numbers (ECCNs) and dual-use export regulations.
• Familiarity with CAS numbers, customs rulings databases, and WCO Explanatory Notes.
• Proficiency in SAP (GTS preferred) and Microsoft Excel.
• Exceptional analytical, research, and documentation skills with high attention to detail.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and in cross-functional, global teams.
