We're looking for a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to own the reliability, performance, and operational maturity of the platform. You'll sit at the intersection of engineering and operations — writing code, hardening infrastructure, and building the systems that let a small team run a HIPAA-regulated healthcare platform with confidence. This is a hands-on senior role: you'll set direction on SLOs, observability, incident response, and infrastructure-as-code while still shipping the work yourself.
Responsibilities
- • Define and drive SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets across our core services, and use them to make real prioritization decisions.
- • Own the observability stack end to end — metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting — so that we detect problems before patients and clinicians do.
- • Lead incident response:
run the on-call program, sharpen runbooks, drive blameless postmortems, and close the loop on action items.
- • Improve the reliability of our data layer, including PostgreSQL operations at scale (logical replication, read replicas, materialized view refresh pipelines, bloat and vacuum management, failover, and recovery).
- • Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines that make deployments boring, repeatable, and safe.
- • Harden the platform for HIPAA compliance — encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, audit logging, backup/restore testing, and disaster recovery drills.
- • Manage and improve our hosting footprint across Aptible and AWS, including capacity planning, cost efficiency, and infrastructure security.
- • Partner with product and application engineers to build reliability in from the start, rather than bolting it on later.
- • Automate the toil out of operational work so the team scales without headcount scaling linearly.
- What We're Looking For
- • 6 years in SRE, DevOps, platform, or infrastructure engineering, including senior ownership of production systems.
- • Strong programming/scripting ability (Python, Go, Bash, or similar) — you automate rather than click.
- • Deep experience operating PostgreSQL in production: replication, performance tuning, backups, and recovery under pressure.
- • Solid hands-on AWS experience (compute, networking, IAM, storage) and comfort with a PaaS layer like Aptible.
- • Proven track record with observability tooling (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana, Datadog, OpenTelemetry, ELK, or equivalent).
- • Experience building CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar).
- • A calm, structured approach to incidents, and the instinct to fix the class of problem, not just the instance.
- • Clear written communication — runbooks, postmortems, and design docs that other people can actually use
Nice to Have
- Exposure to new-age, open-source AI-native observability and AI-SRE tooling — e.g., SigNoz, HolmesGPT, IncidentFox, K8sGPT, Keep, or Coroot — and interest in using AI agents to accelerate root-cause analysis and reduce MTTR. Familiarity with commercial equivalents (e.g., Datadog Bits AI) is a plus, but we favor open-source, self-hostable options. • Experience running systems under HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST, or similar regulatory regimes. • Familiarity with GraphQL infrastructure (e.g., Hasura) and headless CMS platforms (e.g., Strapi). • Background in healthcare, medical device, or other high-stakes/regulated environments. • Experience with identity and access tooling (SSO/SAML/SCIM, Entra ID) and data/BI tools such as Metabase. • Experience defining an on-call culture from scratch or maturing an early-stage one.
