This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Head of Engineering based in India.
This is a pivotal technical leadership opportunity within an early-stage wearable sensing and robotics environment. The role owns end-to-end engineering execution for a body-worn sensing platform, from system architecture through production. You will lead a distributed team of hardware specialists across India and the US while remaining deeply hands-on with critical technical challenges. The position spans power systems, sensor synchronization, firmware, embedded Linux, mechanical engineering, and system integration. Your decisions will directly influence product reliability, wearability, performance, and the capabilities of the underlying technology. This is an in office role in India with regular travel to San Francisco, approximately one week per month.
Accountabilities
- Own end-to-end technical execution of a body-worn sensing platform, from architecture and prototyping through production and shipping.
- Lead and coordinate a distributed engineering team across India and the US, maintaining technical quality and effective collaboration across time zones.
- Define and maintain the overall hardware system architecture, ensuring mechanical, electrical, power, sensor, and firmware subsystems integrate into a cohesive wearable product.
- Make critical design and integration decisions involving power systems, sensor synchronization, firmware, embedded Linux, and mechanical structures.
- Translate product requirements into clear, actionable engineering briefs that enable distributed teams to execute effectively.
- Apply first-principles engineering to power architecture, including multi-rail battery systems, protection circuits, regulator selection, inrush behavior, brownouts, and schematic analysis.
- Solve complex sensor synchronization challenges involving mismatched sample rates, variable bus latency, firmware timestamping, and real-world dataset alignment.
- Debug firmware and system-level issues using schematics, logic analyzers, serial logs, and other diagnostic tools.
- Review and challenge mechanical designs with a focus on engineering integrity, wearability, durability, load paths, tolerance stack-ups, and strain relief.
- Take hands-on ownership of critical technical systems and evaluate their impact on product performance and underlying model capabilities.
- Shape hiring criteria, interview processes, and team development practices as the engineering organization grows.
- Support supply chain, vendor management, manufacturing handoff, regulatory compliance, and production scale-up where required.
Requirements
- 6–10+ years of hardware engineering experience developing wearable devices, robotics, motion-capture systems, or field-deployed hardware.
- Proven experience taking at least one hardware product through the complete development lifecycle, from initial prototype to deployment with real end users.
- US citizenship or a valid US visa is required; visa sponsorship is not available.
- Willingness to be based on-site in India and travel to San Francisco approximately one week per month.
- Deep, hands-on expertise in battery-powered and multi-rail power systems, including protection circuits, regulator topologies, inrush current, brownout analysis, and schematic review.
- Strong experience with sensor synchronization across different sample rates and variable bus latencies, including firmware-level timestamping and diagnosis of real-world data misalignment.
- Practical firmware and embedded Linux expertise, including bringing up SoM/SBC platforms and debugging timing, interrupts, buffers, and related system issues.
- Strong mechanical engineering judgment, including understanding of load paths, tolerance stack-ups, strain relief, durability, and wearable ergonomics.
- Previous experience operating as a Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Founding Engineer, or in a similarly senior technical capacity, rather than solely as an engineering manager.
- Demonstrated ability to lead distributed technical teams and maintain engineering standards without relying on daily in-person oversight.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to translate product requirements into precise engineering specifications and execution briefs.
- Experience with hardware supply chains and vendor management is an advantage.
- Familiarity with UL/IEC regulatory requirements for wearable devices is a plus.
- Experience with manufacturing handoff and hardware production scale-up is desirable.
Benefits
- Salary: $140,000–$210,000 USD annually.
- Significant technical ownership at a critical stage of growth within the wearable sensing and robotics space.
- Opportunity to shape the engineering architecture, technical standards, and culture of a growing organization.
- Hands-on involvement across hardware, firmware, mechanical engineering, sensing, and system integration.
- Opportunity to lead and develop a distributed engineering team across India and the United States.
- On-site work in India with regular travel to San Francisco, approximately one week per month.
- Opportunity to directly influence product quality, reliability, and the capabilities of the underlying technology.
