Summary

A Principal Engineer — Database & Middleware leads the hands-on design, build, and operation of enterprise data and integration platforms across relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL), NoSQL stores (MongoDB), cloud-native database services (AWS RDS/Aurora, GCP Cloud SQL, Azure Cosmos DB), and the full middleware stack — IBM MQ, Kafka, API Gateway, Tibco, MuleSoft, and service mesh.

At, this individual operates as a recognized domain authority — engineering production-grade data and integration platforms, driving automation and observability, and owning reliability outcomes end to end. In a financial services context, every platform decision must satisfy PCI DSS, SOX, DORA, and data residency requirements while meeting the availability and latency demands of mission-critical business services.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Database Platform Engineering

– Design, build, and operate enterprise relational database platforms — Oracle (RAC, Data Guard, ASM), SQL Server (AlwaysOn, SSAS, SSIS), and PostgreSQL — across on-premises and cloud environments

– Engineer and maintain cloud-native database services — AWS RDS/Aurora, GCP Cloud SQL/Spanner, and Azure Cosmos DB — including provisioning, HA configuration, replication, and automated failover

– Implement and operate MongoDB replica sets and sharded clusters for high-throughput, low-latency FSI workloads

– Build and maintain database automation — IaC provisioning (Terraform), schema migration pipelines, backup/restore validation, and patching automation

– Design and implement database high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity architectures — meeting RTO/RPO commitments for Tier 1 FSI workloads

– Engineer database performance — query optimisation, index strategy, execution plan analysis, wait event diagnosis, and capacity right-sizing across all platforms

– Implement and maintain database security controls — TDE, column-level encryption, RBAC, auditing, and data masking — aligned to PCI DSS and SOX requirements

– Drive database observability — metrics collection, slow query alerting, replication lag monitoring, and capacity trending across on-premises and cloud estates

Middleware & Integration Platform Engineering

– Engineer and operate IBM MQ and RabbitMQ messaging infrastructure — queue manager configuration, channel security, HA clustering, and dead-letter queue management

– Design and build Apache Kafka platforms — broker cluster operations, topic design, partition strategy, consumer group management, Schema Registry, and Kafka Connect pipelines

– Engineer CA Siteminder Authentication platform and adapter configuration, process orchestration, HA deployment, and performance tuning

– Design and operate enterprise API Gateway infrastructure — Kong, AWS API Gateway, or Apigee — including rate limiting, authentication, TLS termination, and API versioning

– Implement and operate service mesh platforms — Istio or Linkerd — for microservices traffic management, mTLS enforcement, observability, and circuit breaking





– Build CI/CD and GitOps pipelines for middleware platform configuration, integration flow deployment, and schema lifecycle management

– Drive integration platform observability — distributed tracing, message throughput dashboards, error rate alerting, and end-to-end latency analysis across the integration stack

Technical Leadership & Engineering Excellence

– Set platform engineering standards, reference patterns, and IaC module libraries for database and middleware platforms — codified and reusable across teams

– Conduct production readiness reviews and technical design assessments for data and integration workstreams

– Lead proof-of-concept engineering for emerging database and integration technologies — delivering evidence-based build-vs-buy recommendations

– Mentor senior and mid-level engineers in database internals, integration patterns, and production operations

– Drive continuous improvement — reducing toil through automation, improving platform reliability, and eliminating technical debt across the data and middleware estate

– Support audit, regulatory, and risk management activities — producing platform configuration evidence, data lineage documentation, and compliance reports

Oracle Engineering: RAC, Data Guard, ASM, RMAN — performance tuning, AWR/ASH analysis, schema design, and HA/DR implementation at enterprise scale

SQL Server Engineering: AlwaysOn AG, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS — query tuning, execution plans, index optimisation, and HA configuration for FSI workloads

PostgreSQL: Streaming replication, logical replication, partitioning, VACUUM tuning, pg stat analysis, and extensions (TimescaleDB, PostGIS, Citus)

MongoDB: Replica set and sharded cluster operations, aggregation pipeline optimisation, index strategy, Atlas operations, and change stream engineering

Cloud DB Services: AWS RDS/Aurora (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle), GCP Cloud SQL/Spanner, Azure Cosmos DB — provisioning, HA, replication, and cost optimisation

Kafka: Broker operations, topic/partition design, consumer group management, Kafka Connect, Schema Registry, MirrorMaker 2, and exactly-once semantics

MuleSoft: Anypoint Platform — API design (RAML/OAS), DataWeave transformation, Mule runtime management, CloudHub deployment, and API-led connectivity

IBM MQ / Tibco: MQ queue manager HA clustering, channel security, dead-letter handling Tibco BW/EMS process design, adapter configuration, and performance tuning

API Gateway & Service Mesh: Kong/Apigee policy design, rate limiting, OAuth2/mTLS enforcement Istio traffic management, circuit breaking, and observability

IaC & Automation: Terraform for database and middleware provisioning, Ansible for configuration management, and CI/CD pipelines for schema and integration deployment

Observability: Database and middleware monitoring — Prometheus/Grafana, Datadog, ELK — slow query analysis, message lag alerting, and distributed tracing

FSI Compliance: PCI DSS, SOX, DORA — database encryption (TDE, column-level), audit logging, data residency, masking, and regulatory evidence production

Preferred / Advantageous





– Experience with data streaming architectures — CDC (Debezium), event sourcing, and CQRS patterns across Kafka and cloud messaging services

– Familiarity with GraphQL or AsyncAPI for API and event schema governance in integration platforms

– Exposure to FinOps practices for cloud database estate cost management across AWS, GCP, and Azure

– Background in database or integration platform consulting within financial services or regulated industries

– Database and middleware platforms are secure, observable, and reliably operated — meeting FSI SLA, RTO/RPO, and regulatory requirements consistently

– Infrastructure-as-code coverage is comprehensive — database and middleware environments are reproducible, drift-free, and deployable through automated pipelines

– Integration platform uptime and message delivery reliability are maintained above SLO targets — with end-to-end tracing that makes failure diagnosis fast and precise

– Platform reliability improves measurably quarter-on-quarter — MTTR reduces, toil decreases, and engineering teams adopt reusable IaC modules and integration patterns
