A mechanical maintenance professional is responsible for the upkeep, repair, and troubleshooting of industrial machinery and physical plant equipment. Their primary goal is to minimize equipment downtime, maximize operational efficiency, and ensure all mechanical systems operate safely and in compliance with industry standards.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

- Preventive & Predictive Maintenance: Conduct routine inspections, lubricate moving parts, calibrate instruments, and perform tests to detect potential malfunctions before they cause costly breakdowns.

- Troubleshooting & Repairs: Diagnose complex mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues. Dismantle devices, repair or replace defective parts, and reassemble machines to operational standards.

- Equipment Installation: Assist in the assembly, installation, and commissioning of new machinery and facility upgrades.

- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate logs of maintenance activities, parts inventory, work orders, and equipment history using tools like CMMS/MAXIMO.

- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, local workplace standards) and maintain a clean, organized work environment.

Core Competencies & Qualifications

- Technical Skills: Deep understanding of mechanics,



hydraulics, pneumatics, and rotating equipment (e.g., pumps, fans, compressors). Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.

- Physical & Tool Aptitude: Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and precision measurement devices (e.g., calipers, micrometers). Solid physical stamina is required for lifting heavy objects and working in varying environmental conditions.

- Education & Experience:

- Technician: High school diploma/GED or vocational/trade school certification, plus 2-4 years of hands-on experience.

- Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 3+ years of maintenance experience.

Common Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

- Equipment Uptime: Maintaining an availability rate typically targeted at 95% - 99% depending on the industry.

- Mean Time to Repair (MTTR): Average time taken to fix a failed piece of equipment (aiming for constant minimization).

- Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF): Increasing the duration of reliable operation between breakdowns.
