KUBU RAYA, thekabarnews.com—Kubu Raya Regent Sujiwo has removed special tents and separate refreshments for government officials attending Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day ceremony. He said every participant should experience the event under equal conditions.

The Kubu Raya regency, West Kalimantan, introduced the arrangement ahead of the August 17, 2026, commemoration. Officials, invited guests and other participants will attend the ceremony without a dedicated VIP canopy.

“When ceremony participants stand under the sun, we will also stand under the sun,” Sujiwo said.

The regent said the decision formed part of his effort to build a government culture based on simplicity, discipline, order and empathy.

Sujiwo argued that officials should not receive additional comfort while other participants attend the same ceremony in an open area.

Sujiwo also extended the rule beyond the annual Independence Day commemoration. He instructed Kubu Raya administration offices to stop installing tents or other coverings for officials during regular assemblies and official ceremonies.

“I have instructed that every assembly and ceremony within the Kubu Raya Regency Administration, without exception, must be conducted without tents or coverings of any kind,” Sujiwo remarked.





The local administration will also remove food from VIP areas and other tables while ceremonies are in progress. Organizers may serve meals only after the formal program ends, allowing officials and participants to eat together during the reception.

“We will eat together with the ceremony participants after the event. There will be a reception, so that is when we will all eat together,” Sujiwo said.

He described the policy as a practical demonstration of equality rather than merely a change in event arrangements.

The government expects the measure to encourage officials to show greater solidarity with civil servants, students, ceremonial personnel and residents attending public commemorations.

The no-tent policy accompanies a broader campaign to strengthen discipline and collective responsibility within the Kubu Raya administration.

In June, Sujiwo announced a more binding circular. It encourages government employees, village administrations and residents to revive communal work ahead of Kubu Raya’s anniversary. It supports Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.

Kubu Raya traditionally holds its main Independence Day ceremony at the regent’s office complex. The local government’s official record shows that Sujiwo led the 2025 ceremony there as inspector, emphasizing unity and public service.

Indonesia observes Independence Day every August 17 to commemorate the proclamation issued by Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta in 1945.



The 2026 ceremony marks the republic’s 81st anniversary.

While eliminating VIP privileges, organizers will still need to maintain access to drinking water and first aid. They must provide appropriate assistance for older participants or people with health conditions.

Sujiwo said the central purpose of the policy was to ensure that official ceremonies remain solemn and disciplined. He emphasized the policy also demonstrates that public officials and other participants stand on equal ground.
