Position Title: Embedded Hardware & Platform Engineer (Optical Technologies)
Experience Level: Mid-Level (3–6 Years)
Department: Hardware R&D; / Embedded Engineering
Role Summary
Our client is seeking a versatile Mid-Level Embedded Hardware & Platform Engineer to design, develop, and integrate board-level electronics and low-level firmware for our next-generation optical platforms. In this role, you will bridge high-speed mixed-signal electronics, microcontroller firmware, and precision optical components (such as laser drivers, photodetectors, TEC controllers, and optical transceivers). You will work closely with optics specialists and systems teams from initial concept through prototyping, lab bring-up, and production support.
Key Responsibilities
- Hardware & Circuit Design:Lead schematic capture, component selection, and mixed-signal PCB design for optical control loops, power management, and microcontroller/FPGA sub-systems.
- Embedded Firmware Development:Write and debug reliable, low-level firmware (C/C++, bare-metal, or RTOS) for control interfaces, feedback loops, and communication protocols.
- Electro-Optical System Integration:Interface microcontrollers and FPGAs with optical subsystems (laser bias/modulation, TEC temperature control, transimpedance amplifiers, and photodiode arrays).
- Board Bring-Up & Testing:Conduct hands-on board bring-up, hardware debugging, signal integrity analysis, and optical interface calibration using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and optical power meters.
- Bus & Protocol Management:Implement and validate standard control and telemetry buses (I2C, SPI, UART, PCIe, Ethernet, CAN).
- Cross-Functional Collaboration:Coordinate with optical engineers to translate physical-layer requirements into hardware design specs, and collaborate with layout/manufacturing teams for DFM/DFA compliance.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education:Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Photonics/Optics Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Experience:3–6 years of demonstrated experience in embedded hardware board design and firmware development.
Core Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in C/C++ development for microcontrollers (ARM Cortex-M/R, STM32, NXP, etc.).
- Hands-on experience with PCB schematic capture tools (Altium Designer, KiCad, or Cadence Allegro).
- Working knowledge of closed-loop control algorithms (PID control for laser power, temperature, or optical positioning).
- Proficiency with lab instruments including digital oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and protocol analyzers.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on optical communication hardware (SFP/QSFP transceivers), LiDAR sensors, or precision optical instrumentation.
- Basic understanding of FPGA logic design (Verilog/VHDL) or embedded Linux device drivers.
- Knowledge of EMI/EMC design principles and thermal management in compact electro-optical enclosures.
