Location - MUMBAI
Full-time, Permanent
₹10 to ₹11 LPA
Start: Immediately
We are looking for an art handler. Someone who has spent years inside galleries, museums, or art institutions physically handling, installing, storing, and shipping valuable contemporary artworks. Someone who checks humidity before a painting enters a room. Someone who knows the difference between an acid-free liner and a standard packing blanket. Someone who has stood in front of a ₹1 crore artwork and known exactly how to move it safely.
What you will do
- Plan and supervise the physical installation of high-value contemporary artworks across multiple venues and special projects in Mumbai and across India
- Manage climate-controlled storage facilities - monitoring temperature, relative humidity, and light exposure to conservation standards
- Coordinate domestic and international art shipments end to end - crating specifications, packing materials, condition reports, customs and insurance documentation, fine art freight coordination
- Conduct site surveys ahead of every installation - assessing structural load, hanging systems, lighting requirements, floor load, vibration risk, and security
- Produce detailed condition reports for all incoming and outgoing artworks, documenting any pre-existing damage with photographs and written notation
- Supervise installation crews on site, briefing them on handling protocols and ensuring every team member understands the care standards required
- Oversee the dismantling, repacking, and relocation of artworks to the same standard as the original installation
- Maintain installation schedules, packing records, inventory documentation,
and movement logs across all locations
- Liaise with artists, curators, conservators, and production teams on technical and conservation requirements for each work
- Ensure all handling, transportation, and storage complies with international fine art conservation standards
What you must have done professionally - not theoretically, not occasionally, but as regular practice
- Physically installed and de-installed contemporary artworks including large-scale, fragile, or technically complex pieces in a gallery, museum, or art fair environment
- Managed climate-controlled storage and actively monitored humidity and temperature logs for artwork preservation
- Coordinated fine art shipments domestically and internationally - you have written crating specifications, chosen appropriate packing materials, and worked with specialist fine art freight companies
- Produced condition reports with written descriptions and photographic documentation
- Handled artworks across multiple media - painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, works on paper - each with different handling requirements
- Worked with conservation-standard materials including acid-free tissue, archival foam, custom crating, and appropriate wrapping for different surface types
- Briefed and supervised installation crews who may not have arts backgrounds
- Conducted site surveys and identified and resolved installation challenges before they became problems
Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years of skilled experience in art handling, fine art logistics, or gallery and museum operations
- Background at a gallery, museum, art fair, auction house, biennale, or specialist fine art shipping company
- Degree or diploma in Fine Arts, Museum Studies, Art History, or a related field preferred but not mandatory if experience is strong
- Willingness to travel to project sites across India as required
- Based in Mumbai or able to relocate immediately
