Senior Embedded Software Engineer / Embedded Firmware Engineer

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Embedded Software Engineer with strong expertise in IEC 61850 to join our Grid Automation/Substation Automation product development team. The candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, integrating, and testing embedded software solutions for Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) used in Substation Automation Systems (SAS). The role requires deep knowledge of embedded systems, real-time operating systems, communication protocols, and IEC 61850 standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Design, develop, and maintain embedded software applications using C, C++, and Embedded C.
- Develop and enhance firmware running on RTOS-based platforms (FreeRTOS or equivalent).
- Implement, integrate, and troubleshoot IEC 61850 communication protocols, including MMS and GOOSE messaging.
- Develop and validate Client/Server communication models in IEC 61850-based systems.
- Configure, analyze, and manage IEC 61850 data models, logical nodes, and SCL files (ICD, CID, SCD).
- Design and develop software for IEC 61850-compliant Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).
- Perform debugging and root-cause analysis using JTAG/SWD and other embedded debugging tools.
- Develop and optimize TCP/IP networking applications, including socket programming and HTTP/HTTPS-based communications.
- Conduct unit, integration, system, and interoperability testing with third-party IEC 61850 devices and SCADA systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including system architects, QA engineers, product owners, and field engineers.
- Participate actively in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog grooming, and retrospectives.
- Ensure software quality through code reviews, documentation, static code analysis, and adherence to secure coding practices.

Required Qualifications




- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics & Communication, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or a related field.
- Strong hands-on experience in C, C++, and Embedded C programming.
- Experience with RTOS environments such as FreeRTOS, ThreadX, VxWorks, or equivalent.
- Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking, socket programming, HTTP, and HTTPS protocols.
- Proven experience with IEC 61850 standard implementation and integration.
- Hands-on knowledge of:
- MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification)
- GOOSE Messaging
- Client/Server Architecture
- Logical Nodes and Data Models
- SCL Configuration Files
- Experience developing, integrating, and testing IEDs and Substation Automation solutions.
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills in embedded environments.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Git-based version control systems.
- Knowledge of Static Code Analysis tools and software quality processes.
- Familiarity with Jira, Azure DevOps, or similar Agile project management tools.
- Exposure to power systems, protection relays, smart grid, or utility automation products.
- Understanding of cybersecurity practices for industrial communication systems.

Roles & Responsibilities

Technical Skills Requirement - IEC 61850

Must Have Skills

· Strong programming experience in C, C++ and Embedded C.

· Good understanding and hands-on experience with RTOS concepts (FreeRTOS or equivalent RTOS platforms).

· Experience in embedded system debugging using JTAG/SWD interfaces.

· Strong knowledge of TCP/IP networking, including:





o Socket Programming o HTTP/HTTPS Protocols

· Strong understanding and hands-on experience with IEC 61850 communication protocol for Substation Automation Systems (SAS).

· Experience with IEC 61850 services and models, including:

o MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification)

o GOOSE (Generic Object-Oriented Substation Event)

o Client/Server communication

· Knowledge of IEC 61850 logical nodes, data models, and Substation Configuration Language (SCL) files.

· Experience in developing, integrating, testing, and troubleshooting IEC 61850-compliant Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).

· Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, daily stand-ups, and collaborative software development practices.

Good to Have Skills

· Experience with Git version control system.

· Exposure to Static Code Analysis tools and secure coding practices.

· Familiarity with Agile project management and tracking tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps.
