Senior Java Microservices Engineer – Payments
Location: Hyderabad

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Microservices Engineer with strong expertise in Java, Microservices, AWS, distributed systems, and payment technologies.
The ideal candidate will have deep hands-on experience designing and developing scalable backend systems using Java and Spring Boot, along with strong knowledge of AWS cloud services and modern microservices architectures. A strong understanding of the payments domain, particularly ACH, RTP, Zelle, SWIFT, and Federal Reserve (FED) payment systems, is highly important for this role.
The candidate will be responsible for designing and delivering highly available, secure, resilient, and scalable payment solutions while working closely with architects, product teams, security, DevOps, and other engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Java & Microservices Development
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.
- Build and enhance cloud-native microservices supporting high-volume payment processing.
- Develop secure and resilient RESTful APIs and service integrations.
- Apply strong object-oriented design, design patterns, clean coding practices, and SOLID principles.
- Develop highly maintainable, testable, and production-ready code.
- Participate in code reviews and provide technical guidance to other engineers.
- Troubleshoot complex application and production issues.
- Continuously improve application performance, scalability, and maintainability.
Payments Domain
- Design and develop solutions supporting payment processing and financial transaction workflows.
- Demonstrate strong understanding of payment rails and financial messaging, including:
- ACH
- RTP (Real-Time Payments)
- Zelle
- SWIFT
- Federal Reserve / FED payment systems
- Understand payment transaction lifecycles, processing flows, settlement, clearing, routing, and exception handling.
- Work with payment-related business requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
- Understand transaction status, acknowledgements, reversals, retries, reconciliation, and error-handling scenarios.
- Design systems capable of processing high-volume and time-sensitive financial transactions.
- Ensure payment applications meet appropriate reliability, security, and compliance expectations.
System Design & Distributed Systems
- Design highly scalable, resilient, and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
- Lead technical design discussions for complex business and payment-processing requirements.
- Apply distributed systems principles to address:

- Design,
deploy, and support cloud-native applications using AWS.

- Design secure and highly available AWS architectures.
- Implement appropriate AWS networking, security, monitoring, and deployment patterns.

- Troubleshoot application and infrastructure issues in AWS environments.
Security & Compliance
- Design applications following security-by-design principles.
- Implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms.
- Apply appropriate encryption and data protection practices.
- Work with AWS IAM, roles, policies, secrets, and least-privilege access.
- Protect sensitive financial and customer information.
- Ensure APIs and microservices follow enterprise security standards.
- Collaborate with security and compliance teams to address application risks.
- Understand security and compliance considerations applicable to financial services and payment applications.
- Support audit, risk assessment, vulnerability remediation, and compliance activities.
Reliability & Resilience
- Design systems with high availability and strong operational resilience.
- Implement fault-tolerant application and infrastructure patterns.
- Develop appropriate retry, timeout, circuit-breaker, and fallback mechanisms.
- Design for disaster recovery and business continuity requirements.
- Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability.
- Analyze production incidents and conduct root cause analysis.
- Drive continuous improvements to system reliability and operational performance.
API & Integration
- Design and develop RESTful APIs for internal and external integrations.
- Integrate microservices with payment platforms and enterprise systems.
- Work with synchronous and asynchronous integration patterns.
- Handle JSON/XML and other financial data formats where applicable.
- Implement API security, validation, error handling, and versioning.
- Ensure APIs are scalable, reliable, and backward compatible.
Testing & Quality
- Develop comprehensive unit, integration, and automated tests.
- Follow test-driven and quality-focused development practices where appropriate.
- Validate application behavior under high-volume and failure scenarios.
- Participate in performance and load testing.
- Identify and resolve defects before production deployment.
- Maintain strong code quality and engineering standards.
CI/CD & DevOps
- Work with DevOps teams to establish automated build, test, and deployment pipelines.
- Participate in CI/CD processes using tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab, or equivalent.
- Support containerized application deployments using Docker and Kubernetes/EKS where applicable.
- Implement automated quality and security checks within delivery pipelines.
- Support production releases, rollback strategies, and deployment validation.
Collaboration & Technical Leadership

Required Skills & Qualifications Must-Have
- 6+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with Core Java.
- Strong experience with Spring Boot and Microservices.
- Extensive experience designing and developing REST APIs.
- Strong hands-on experience with AWS.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and system design.
- Proven experience developing highly scalable and resilient applications.
- Strong understanding of payment systems and financial transaction processing.
- Hands-on or strong domain experience with ACH, RTP, Zelle, SWIFT, and/or FED payment systems.
- Solid understanding of application security and compliance.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities.
Preferred Technical Skills

Payments Domain Knowledge Candidates should have a strong understanding of one or more payment ecosystems, with preference for experience across multiple payment rails:
- ACH: Automated Clearing House payment processing and transaction lifecycle.
- RTP: Real-time payment processing, instant settlement, transaction status, and high-availability requirements.
- Zelle: Digital account-to-account payment flows and associated transaction processing.
- SWIFT: Financial messaging and international payment communication.
- FED: Federal Reserve payment infrastructure and related transaction processing.
Experience working with payment gateways, payment processors, transaction routing, clearing and settlement, reconciliation, fraud controls, or payment orchestration platforms is highly desirable. Security & Reliability Competencies The successful candidate should demonstrate:
